So now I don't rely on my computer for schoolwork; I can be a bit more adventurous.![]()
I just reinstalled Hardy Heron, and, after the routine installation of codecs/drivers and customizations, I plan to
1) Do the fix for the Ubuntu HD problems![]()
2) Follow up some of the tips I've been given to fix a couple of quirks (window decoration and brightness levels)
3) (After backing up, of course) carefully check my partition numbers, and use the Dell MD CD to make my MD button boot Ubuntu
So, that's the agenda.![]()

LOL, nice.
Have Fun. -
Its winter were im from, but Good luck
-
Sounds like a good way to kill an evening or three
Summer here is hot, muggy and chock full of hurricanes. Winter is warm, dry and nice.
-
Well, this is supposed to be Summer, but it is 6AM and freezing outside. Literally freezing. This is June 11th! What kind of joke?
-
wow.. can u actually do that?? that would be awesome!!
-
I think I'm going to install Gentoo (for the 3rd time). Kubuntu's too easy/boring.
-
There was recently a thread about this, in which the OP was directed to two earlier threads about it. I had read those earlier threads before, and attempted it myself, but I hadn't got the partition numbers straight, and ended up screwing my computer.
But this time I'll get it.

Summer is a great time for projects. Last summer I made a DVR/Home Theatre box. Not sure what is in store for this summer, I am broke at the moment. I was thinking of getting a new laptop and seeing how many distros I can install on it and have them function correctly. Though I would also like to build a home server with an insane amount of storage for all my media and move away from a desktop to just a laptop as my main machine. We'll see.
-
Updating...51 out of bloody 160 files to download.
-
That's my next project. 12tb NAS server for primarily all of my DVDs, CDs, and then of course it will be my backup server for my laptop, dhcp server for my home network, and any other kind of server I need. The OS? Gentoo of course..
Good Luck.. -
Kewl....now *I've* got the bug.....been wanting to build a box for a while now, there's a plenty good reason for me too.
-
That's quite a lot of storage! In what kind of case are you going to put all of the hard drives?
-
What kind or type of the hdd are you gonna use? I know there are now the 1tb hdd sata for sale lately ... what box/planar/raid? (just curious)
Btw my summer? Upgrade of CentOS 5.1 to 5.2 (small step at first look but big one for me, since of the new kernel)
-
I'm downloading 260 updates at 35kb/s. The next release will be out by the time its done.
-
I got the same 160 updates with a fresh install.
-
I've gotten 107 so far with Mint Elyssa.
-
Is the upgrade to kernel 'linux-image-2.6.24-18-generic 2.6.24-18.32' included'?
And if so, what update-level has it got? -
Not sure..
Almost all of them were level 3, though. -
Kernel update have level 5 warnings. It's safe to enable level 4 and 5 updates but clem just wanted everything to be MUCH safer and even though you keep the old kernel and don't benefit from the newer one unless you know what you're doing you have stability. That's one thing i like about Ubuntu, it just updates and that's all i want.

I bought it all at Newegg and I've got it built now. I just don't have the software loaded on it yet. You can look at all of the components on Newegg's Public wishlist feature, on my wishlist. You can see that I didn't go with hardware based RAID, and instead I'm going to use all 12 of the SATA drives in a software RAID5 striped volume. I might then use LVM to manage the volumes so I can export, via NFS, different volumes for Music, Movies, Television, and Documentaries, etc. Lastly because I don't want to lose any space across the RAID stripe, and because it's relatively straightforward to do, I will probably boot from a USB stick. However having said all of that, this will be my first time doing a Linux install with either RAID5 or LVM, so I expect to learn a bunch too.. (anyway we are talking summer projects here..)
Good Luck.. -
I think you picked some pretty good drives there. I have one of the WD GP 1 TB drives and I think I might need to get another. Looks like a fun project.
-
And I'm thinking I'm going to have a hard time setting up RAID1... ;/
-
Still working on those updates...
-
O_O How can you still be downloading them? I thought you had DSL...
-
DSL??? LOL.
No.
I'm on fairly slow wireless. And before I get my wireless driver installed, I have to dl via Ethernet, which I can only hook up to when my dad's computer isn't, and when I'm home to supervise.
-
That's gotta suck.
-
It's high-speed compared to de.1337.
-
Lol, talk about it. Someday...
eh, i should go to bed...
-
I went to bed after you did. Closer to 12AM than 11PM.
-
Go away...
-
Nice. I got a lot of my customizations done today. It looks sicker than ever.
Screenshot tomorrow. -
I've gone ahead and went back Xubuntu.....working on making it sick....LOL
-
Man, I customized Ubuntu up again...Compiz is so sweet. You can check out my screenshots in the desktop thread.
I also ran the fix for the HD cycle bug, which was affecting my computer. It worked.
BTW, I got my Ubuntu stickers from System76. de.1337, I'll give you one.
-
Oh... finally. Coolness. Thanks.
-
You said something about dial-up not working right? Here's some help from UF.
So, it's Summer...
