So, does anyone use Solaris?
I'm interested in it.
How hard is it to use?
I'm thinking very hard w/limited hardware support.

Yeah, you really need to make sure your hardware is compatible with it. I ssl into Solaris 10, and once you get into it, it operates much the same as Linux.
-
Why are you interested in Solaris in particular?
-
Random, I wanted to know more about it

If you're looking for alternative operating systems, then you might want to consider the BSD family too.
-
Odd birds like Solaris 10 seem to draw people in out of curiosity
I've looked at it myself.

I just installed in under Parallels. Years ago, my old University had Solaris (I think verison 8) and X Windows. Had to try out S10 just for nostalgia sakes. Their Java GUI is way too windows. But SOOOO much faster lol.
Fun to play with :-D -
Solaris isn't designed for laptops though; it is meant for specific server hardware... so running it on a laptop will be a pain in the backside. It has no power management features, or features that operating systems like Windows, Mac, or Linux can do for general users such as ourselves. But hey, its your funeral.

I read somewhere also that if you weren't an administrator or formally trained or experienced in Unix, you shouldn't even bother with it.
