    More market share. Why would you care if they dropped Linux support?

    Was very disappointed when I read the Songbird blog entry yesterday :(

    Songbird was the best audio player imo. The project recently started setting odd priorities. I couldn't care less about video support in Songbird... but i DO want linux support.

    Oddly enough, I just dropped support for Songbird on all my machines, both Linus and Windows! It was not without some heartache, and all the rest of that stuff....

    Unfortunate, but it came from a lack of developers. Those that have the ability and interest to maintain a Linux version of Songbird, contact them and say you're willing. Linux has many other fine open source media players (Audacious, Banshee, RhythmBox, Amarok ), so this loss isn't felt quite as acutely as if they were to leave Windows behind, for instance.

    ChivalricRonin and all,

    I don't think it's a lack of developers per se. They just decided to use their resources for things other than Linux support. I already said above that I don't think that's wise (imo, they overestimate how important features such as video playback are to users).

    On a different note, I'm fairly sure that Linux users contribute "more than their fair share" to Songbird. I would think Linux users are more likely than Win/Mac users to file bug reports, submit patches, support other users, etc. In addition to that, Linux users have played a major role in developing Songbird's "eco-system" (think stuff like GStreamer).

    I just read the above linked Lyrebird snippet and I have to ask; no love for Clementine player here on NBR?

    It's a QT4 port of Amarok 1.4, looks a bit as an Amarok for Gnome; less cluttered/cleaner interface (no offense KDE lovers ;)).

    It's a rather new project so it's far from finished.
    What needs to be done yet;
    * Automatically copy files from disk to your music library
    * iPod and MP3 player support
    * Global shortcut keys on Windows and Mac OS X
    * Saving playlists
    * Automatic tag completion

    Still, I like this project much and I'm keeping an eye on it; Clemetine Player link

    I call bs after reading today that 10.9% of Songbird users run the Linux version and 10.8% of Songbird users run the Mac version. (Those interested might want to re-read the blog post. They've added some statistics there.)

    Tried it, was okay but didn't really like it. One thing keeps me with Songbird, its Shoutcast Radio integration. No other player does it so good. If I could get myself off of that, then I would drop Songbird.

    I don't like Winamp. Winamp uses the web browser and just goes to the Shoutcast website. And Winamp is ugly. On linux I'll stick with Nightingale and on Windows use Foobar/Zune.

    There will be a Linux fork called Nightingale rather than Lyrebird.

    To be honest, the only reason I tried Songbird was because of it's connections to Mozilla. And I really don't suffer much that they've dropped support for linux because I don't use it very often anyway. There's stuff like Amarok, Exaile, Banshee, Rhythmbox, mpd+(frontends), Quod Libet, etc. We have plenty of options.

    they aren't killing it, they just can't do version parity with linux because of whatever reason.

    it's still open source, and it looks like the project will fork.
