Ubuntu 7.10 on an Acer laptop with Core 2 Duo T5250. Dual-booting vista.
Didn't bother timing the time to GRUB screen. Not very long.
40 seconds from leaving GRUB screen to the splash screen asking for username/password.
27 seconds from entering password until usable desktop.
13 seconds from tapping "Shut Down" button til laptop is off.

vista takes about 4 minutes from password screen to usable desktop. If you try to open Firefox or Thunderbird too soon they come up but they're not functional.

vista uses about 750 MB of RAM at an idle. Ubuntu uses about 220 MB.

Been that way from day one. Not too worried about it. I haven't done anything to optimize the install or turn off services.

No, it was like that before SP1. My boot time has always been ~30 seconds. But you've got to remember I'm an order freak, and micromanage everything on my computer. I've tweaked everything and organized everything just how I like it, but I actually left the default services.

But I figured, "Why not?" since I have a good boot time, and nothing is sluggish.

My XP used to boot in 26 seconds.
I'm sure I can make Ubuntu lower & post how. ;)
Yes, XP & Ubuntu are almost immediately usable after logging in.

IDK, I get better times then some SSDs, well maybe its because I had like 3 desktop icons, & defraged my boot files(tuneXP).

Defrag boot files FTW! In the NBR Vista Tips and Tweaks Guide there is a link to that bat file that defrags the boot files, and I use that often. I also defrag my HD fairly frequently, and only have 2 programs in my Startup folder. That being said, I haven't removed any services or anything via msconfig, so I might be able to get it down a bit more....come to think of it, why do I let iTunes and Quicktime launch at startup?!?! I better fix that right away. :p

Oh, and I have a 5400rpm HD too.

Hmmm, maybe I should look into cutting down on stuff running in Ubuntu at startup.

On Arch linux 46 seconds to boot on my 4200rpm 20GB 1.8" drive in my Sony T250...with the 5 seconds the boot loader waits for and 10-11 seconds to turn off. It boots to a command line login and I shut it down from there.

Debian on my 400MHz C1 (5400rpm 100GB drive) takes 1:30 to get to the GDM screen w/ the 5 seconds from the boot loader and 14 seconds to shut down from the GDM screen.

You guys have worked some magic with your vista boots. I don't really even care about vista, hate going there, but left it on the thing because I need to learn about it and it's been useful when I'm trying to help out neighbors who have new computers.
Two neighbors have new vista machines, one a notebook (5400 rpm) and the other a desktop (7200). They've had the exact same experience as me - vista takes a few minutes to get going and if they try to go online or get email too soon FF and TB don't work. I've talked both parties into staying away from IE and OE.
I've done minor tweaking; turning off some services, shutting down aero, clearing out most of the startup stuff - still awfully slow compared to what some of you are describing!
