Hi guys! Could anybody tell me if it is finally possible to use aiglx with fglrx? I'm getting a computer with an ati card and well last time I tried running using fglrx well I couldn't run blender with compiz enabled or anything requiring 3d would either have a black windows or would just run as slow as molasse; that was with a x700... How is it gonna run with an hd3650?

The ATI Drivers for Linux are pretty decent now, check out the ATI website.

I still can't run opengl applications while using compiz...

Not here neither on a desktop which has an ATI x1950.

edit: That is with the restricted drivers via ubuntu.

The restricted drivers are old. Anyway I'll be receiving my card by the end of the week, I'll try then.

Hmm... well, with compiz disabled, everything works ok.

Anyway, i guess that driver package gets updated often?
From times to times my fglrx package gets updated via automatic update. Though now i'm not sure how long ago it was last updated... Maybe you're right.

Are the ati.com drivers different/better than the fglrx ones downloadable via apt-get? If so, i might try them too, and i can tell how they do with compiz+3D then.

Usually much newer. Also, if you don't like that, try googling EnvyNG.

    i'm interested in your feedbad.
i have an old Dell with an ATI card, and it was so horrible i had to sell the laptop and get an Asus with an nvidia card. been on nvidia ever since.
i would like to switch back (since they're helping the open source community) but i won't do so until i'm assured I can really use it :)

I just finished installing 8.8 drivers from ati.com.

I don't see any noticeable difference between the Ubuntu repository drivers and these ones. I followed the instructions from
. It all run ok and i guess the installation was successful.
I still can't run compiz and 3d applications simultaneously (not an issue to me though, without compiz i can run any 3d application perfectly as always.)

It wouldn't be an issue for me either were it not for an annoying compiz bug that causes all the windows on all the virtual desktops to to jump to the first desktop whenever compiz is turned on/off.

Your best bet is to probably go on the Ubuntu forums.

On my 7422GX, using the repository ATI drivers, I can run OGL apps without problem with full Compiz effects, and glxgears only reports about a ~5 FPS loss with Compiz enabled (2700 FPS vs. 2705, for those who haven't used glxgears before and thought that 5 FPS would be significant :p). I concur that your issue seems like something for the Ubuntu forums.

More generally speaking, I've found post-AMD ATI driver support to be fantastic, though anything would seem fantastic compared to the "dark times," where simple getting accelerated 2D out of most ATI cards on Linux required complex voodoo rituals.

Hey. I think of buying a laptop with either HD3450/3650 (Dell Studio1535 or Toshiba A300-1GN). I would like to use Linux with it. Do you think I can safely buy one or rather try to find something with nv?

Yeah, I have an old Gateway 7405GX with a Radeon 9600 card that works incredibly well once up and running.
