Hmmm, Most people got it to work by downloading all the updates via Ethernet.

If I am not mistaken the 2.6.24 kernel has intels 4965 driver built in to it. http://www.intellinuxwireless.org/?p=iwlwifi

@Thomas. You may want to add links on your guide to http://screencasts.ubuntu.com Alot of good screencast there that show how to set up ubuntu.

according to this you shouldnt have to. Your wireless card should just work. Are you upgrading from a previous kernel?

This is pretty much informative, but do you have plan to cover dual-boot with XP? I just installed ubuntu today, but I'm not planning to leave xp too soon, at least not before I finish my thesis. I feel a bit awkward using Linux GUI.

I read this guide yet I'm failed to boot into windows (don't see anything about Other OS)

And also, I couldn't mount my flashdisk into ubuntu 7.10, I wonder if something is not right with my setting? Any help would be appreciated >__<

Well, generally, this guide covers dual-booting.
That guide is a little dated....
    Does it work in 8.04?

Sorry thomas, but I really couldn't find anything on this guide that covers dual boot, please correct me if I'm wrong.

Basically, unlike that dual-boot guide said, I supposed to change the value of defaultnum into 4 since Windows XP is supposed to be detected by the grub. But in my menu.lst, I only found 3 linux installation and it ends as it is, no windows xp or anything. Is there anything I could do to fix this?

Guessing here, but I think your distro probably overwrote your XP system, or at least the MBR. You can correct the MBR problem by booting your XP disk, click on repair, then Recovery Console, and then typing fixmbr at the prompt.

got it, I'll try it after updating this ubuntu then.

Also, I tried to insert another boot entry on the menu.lst, and it make a choice to enter winxp is visible, but the problem is, I got the message "error 13", the partition couldn't be executed or something like that.

does that imply the master boot record has been overwritten?

update. I tried to fix the mbr, and resulting I lost both ubuntu and xp. I have formatted both partition and installing xp. I think I will avoid using ubuntu for time being, at least till I finish my thesis X(

Great guide, but just a question. Would ANYTHING be different if I were using a solid-state drive? Such as partitioning? I've dual-booted with Ubuntu/XP several times but never on a solid-state obviously.

I don't think so, but I haven't used an SSD.
I guess it would be the same process....
Maybe a bit faster installing ;)

Thanks for the great guide, I am about to pull the trigger and have Linux installed. But before I do, I just wanted to confirm that XP along with all of its content saved and will not be deleted?

Also, how likely is it that something will happen to XP that will make it unusable. (I do not have a spare XP install CD)

Finally, is there any difference from using the ISO format to install the OS V.S. the "install within windows" option?

    Thank you

    1. It is unlikely your files will get deleted, but you should back all your important data up.
    2. 1/100
    3. yes, the "Install from within Windows" option uses wubi to install ubuntu like any other windows program, but the downside is that Ubuntu is not on it's own partition, and is much slower.

Forget wubi....set aside a blank XP partition, say the d: drive to install Linux on. During Ubuntu install it will ask you if you want to use the entire disk...the answer is NO. Install onto the new partition. What sort of XP do you have...OEM....what are your partition right now? I use a / for the linux OS, a /home and a /swap....I have four total partitions because I use retail Vista which resides on the C: drive with no f'd up factory restore partition. You are limited to four partitions, but if you have to, select the blank d: drive for example and let Ubuntu set it's own partitions if you have to.

Zoid, you are not limited to four partition, just go extended, most modern OSes can be installed on extended partitions, even Vista.

I just finished installing Ubuntu Wubi and playing around a bit. I got compiz enabled and have the cube setup but can't get my screen brightness to turn down. I try the hot keys but they aren't working.

Does anybody know what I am doing wrong?

Speaking of brightness, I need to research it some, since my brightness only has 3 levels -- it seems to skip several with each keystroke.

Has anyone mentioned concurrent boot? Basically it enhances the boot process by taking an advantage from hyper-threading or multi-core processor.

then find CONCURRNCY=none and change it to
    CONCURRENCY=shell

It sped up the booting by about 5-6 seconds on my lappy. :)
