Install Samsung's printer drivers and as a bonus you get a nice security hole the size of an aircraft carrier. Here's the Slashdot article:

    http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/07/18/0319203&from=rss

It's ridiculous. Somebody found that he could access root-only files with OO and then someone else inspecting the code of the driver's install script found this:

The stupid script sets all of those application's setuid flag.   Some people think this is a trojan but others think Samsung just hired idiots to code the install scripts. I'm inclined to think the latter myself. Holy cow! How idiotic can Samsung be???

Samsung makes printers? This is why you stick with normal hardware; I use HP printers and it's great because of integrated support in Linux.

Samsung is as normal as it gets. The printer *I* bought from them does not use those crappy drivers they unleashed upon the world, was much cheaper than an HP, and worked fine with Linux. If I had bought an HP, *I* would have gained nothing.

HP sold me a faulty scanner some years ago. I discovered the problem after their crap warranty had expired. Does it work okay? Yes. Does it work as advertised? No way!!! It's not so bad that I had to replace the scanner but bad enough that I don't want to buy from them again. HP also has a bad reputation in my wife's eyes. She's a network admin and manager of an IT group. She finds that HP is very difficult to deal with when it comes to getting service from them.

Perhaps normal wasn't the right word; mainstream or supported was what I meant. I've never had good luck with HP computers either, but I've never had an issue with HP printers/scanners, especially on Linux. Their Windows drivers pretty much suck though.

Samsung printers are geared towards businesses not Home/Personal user. Even though they might have a few models made for Home/Personal.

HP is the best for Home/Personal use.

    Exactly.
