OK, so this Linux newbie just installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on my Lenovo X61 notebook using the Alternate distribution, and it went without a hitch. I'm seriously considering using Linux full-time now, since Lucid seems fast and stable. For my Windows needs, VirtualBox on the Linux host, an "nlited" XP (sorry, no interest in Vista or 7) guest and life is good! Simple.
So, not knowing much about customizing Ubuntu, I would be interested in what you pros think are the TOP three GUI enhancements. With enough responses showing individual preferences, I'll probably end up with ten that I can try!

-
Compiz, Panel full of system monitoring tools and preview enabled on mouse over (that might be in compiz), Cairo Dock, for starters.
Also for a bit of eye candy GRUB2 background and higher resolution (but you're not multi-booting), -
Gnome Shell, Docky, and Elementary Theme.
Or
Globalmenu, docky, and compiz. -
Gnome Do is worth playing around with.
What you might want to try is installing alternative desktops like kde, xfce, lxde, etc. and try them out. Once they are installed, you can log out and start a new session in them. -
I would play with Conky or GKrellM. Also, as v1k1ng1001 proposes, try alternative desktops and window managers.
Also visit GNOME-Look for finding some new GTK themes.
