I just tried to install Ubuntu 7.04 and after trying both live and alternate it would hang when scanning for my ATA drive and then saying the port failed to install. I did happen to get further under the alternate but it would stop and ask me for a driver for my ata drive.

If this was a desktop I would probably try reconnecting the drive or try another port but this is a notebook so I there isn't anything I can think of.

The factory install of Vista works fine.

Found the problem on thinkwiki, it seems like it doesn't like SATA on AHCI. It's crazy how linux is so finicky about settings.

It seems that AHCI is a setting that only Vista and kernel 2.6.19 can use. What kernel version does feisty use by default?

Feisty's default kernel is like, 2.6.17 I think. Might be 15. I do know that it's got 2.6.20 currently, though. You might try the preview releases of Gutsy Gibbon, which should have 2.6.20 or higher in by default.

Feisty's default kernel is 2.6.15 as Pitabred speculated.

"Default kernel" is an ambiguous term.

I've installed Feisty at the end of May. The install disk I have has the following kernel on it:

    2.6.20-15-generic (root@palmer) #2 SMP Sun Apr 15 07:36:31 UTC 2007
    2k6!

The kernel I'm running now is:

    2.6.20-16-generic #2 SMP Thu Jun 7 20:19:32 UTC 2007 i686 GNU/Linux
