Hello, I have the laptop in my sig.
I am dual booting between XP and Ubuntu.
    However, I have some questions.

    1) I am having trouble finding an 8600gt driver, so I can enable acceleration. I have installed a program called Engy, but it says "Dependency not satisfiable." And I tryed both versions of it. How do I get my drivers to work? I see it as a restricted driver, but it wont let me enable it, nvidia-glx-new is missing in a package.

    2) Does ubuntu have a built-in firewall? Are there any virus at all?

    3) Also, when I partition my driver, i noticed that it made a new filesystem partition. Can I put stuff in there? Because in XP it now says I have 129GB instead of the previous 145GB max.

    4) Yes, I have read many threads on how to get stuff to work, but how do I get the audio drivers to work? I cant use my hotkeys for volume either.

    5) My wireless connections do not work.

The Ubuntu 8.04 Beta is out. For whatever reason it works better with my 8600m gt and audio. It is perfectly stable and you can update over the next month to the final release. Install it instead of 7.1

Envy stinks. Don't use it. Use the restricted drivers manager to install drivers for your video card and wireless card.

Install ext2 ifs. It will allow you to read/write to your linux partition from windows. http://www.fs-driver.org/

Ubuntu comes with a firewall and you can add anti-virus, but probably won't need to.

But the restricted drivers manager wont enable my drivers. It says im missing something from a package.

    EDIT:
Ok I downloaded and installed Ubuntu 8.04.
Well ok, my sound works, but I dont see a restricted drivers manager anymore.
I tryed to click on hardware information, but the application always crashes and is
forced to close... asking for me to send a bug report.

Well how do i get my nvidia drivers to work? Because it is even more sluggish now :(

Ok, I got everything to work. I did it my own way.
I would nvidia-new packages, and i downloaded those and enabled them. And it says it was made for the geforce 8 series. Everything seems fine now. My sound works and everything.

But is there anyway to change the volume increments? Because I notice that it seems to increment exponentially. Like the first few increments are subtle, but the last few are very loud.

Also, I am using mozilla firefox 3, and my fonts for some sites... including this one are messed up. I'm typing in size 16 font lol.

And another thing, i always feel like i have to press in the scroll wheel quite firmly to get it to work for tabbed browsing when I use firefox.

And also, where can I download cool desktop mods for ubuntu?

Lastly, why does it say my monitor refresh rate is 50Hz, it wont let me go higher. It should be 60Hz.

...And lastly, again, my wireless still doesnt work. I'm not sure if its because I dont know how to use it, but I thought it should automatically connect. What drivers do I need for my wireless card?

Weird, my 8600M GT worked fine with the restricted drivers manager.

The only reason I say not to use Envy is that it does an end run around synaptic so that there is potential for the dependencies to be screwed up.

You should be able to use the restricted drivers manager to set up your wireless card too. You have to enable networking though. What have you done so far?
