There's a nice Phoronix article on ATI's Linux drivers, their current state, and what the plan is on moving forward on the development of them. Hopefully AIGLX support will be in the next release...

Urgh! I've started reading the article and stopped as soon as the author started tearing up about how users don't know how much hard work go into the drivers. So on one hand we have ATI which has crappy drivers and on the other hand there's nVidia which has decent drivers. I should tear up and hug ATI because it's so darn hard to make good drivers?

I don't think so. ATI has *already* taken my money but I've been getting crap from them for the past 3 years. I'm looking for a new laptop this summer. You can be sure it won't have ATI graphics.

Sorry, but that article is pathetic. ATI had HOW LONG to be ready for the versioning change? How hard could that have been? Still, they blew it. Did they say 'oops' and fix it right away? Nope. We had to wait more. And the most recent driver didn't even work out of the box.

Look, either ATI is incompetent or they don't care, but either way, the result is the same: lousy drivers. See the thread discussing the article for examples. I link to the third page, where the following is posted.

And to quote Thund from page 5:
Summary: ATI/AMD is NOT doing us any favors. Of course, we make up such a small slice of their economics that it doesn't really matter to them if we all go to nvidia.

Whilst I do understand the amount of work that goes into a driver release, with the current state of affairs, I can't recommend ATi to anyone.
