I figured I'd get a jump on this and install as, being a windows user, I am petrified of being attacked. Although with Linux no anti virus, etc.. is needed, the firewall still is a necessity. I have one on my router, and all my windows laptops run Kaspersky 2011 internet suite with firewall.
Now after looking at the UFW and settings, I am stumped.I have never actually had to add/subtract programs/services in detail like the UFW requires. Sad to say I don't know the best way yo set this UFW up. I don't know have of what the items are the I could allow or deny. Is there a basic setup somewhere I could follow till I read up on this stuff? Thanks in advance.

You can download GUFW in the Ubuntu Software Center or by:
sudo apt-get install gufw -
Thanks Linuxwannabe, but this is the one I already have.

I suggest looking over the documentation for iptables - as this is what ufw uses to implement the firewall. There's also a number of ways to generate a suitable file with rules that you need.

I'm not too familiar with Ubuntu (I use Slackware myself), but generally to start / stop services or daemons, you need to modify your init scripts. This link might be useful:

Hope this helps!
