I have Ubuntu 8.04 on my laptop and USB was working for a while. But now I can't get my mouse and external drive to work in any of the ports?

    sudo modprobe ehci_hcd
    sudo modprobe uhci_hcd

Do they work in the live CD? If so, try comparing the loaded modules.

Also, give us the results of 'lspci'

Oh, those ehci and uhci modules, thats for 2.6.27, and I'm getting the feeling they've changed at some recent point. If that's not it, try a 'locate ehci | grep .ko' to get the right module name. Do the same with uhci.
