Hi guys i am planning to get another HDD for my lappy and i will be installing ubuntU on it. Has anyone run ubuntu 64bit. is it stable. Does it run great. I have not used linux for a long time. Let me know if it is better to install the 32bit version of ubuntu. Thanks. (Happy Now)

ive had no problems with ubuntu 7.10 x64, but i had alot of problems with 8.04 x64.
There really is no yes or no answer here, your going to have to try a few different distros and versions and stuff before you find one that you like and works well. -
OK, first of all, it's Ubunt U, not Ubunt O. Second, install the 32bit version - there's no real advantage to 64bit in most use cases, and you just run into driver/software issues.

I first installed 64-bit and used it for a couple weeks. But recently because of work (some programs only ran on x86 architecture) I switched and in my opinion the x86 version is much easier to use (less headaches). Unless you really need the benefits that the 64-bit OS offers, I'd vote for installing the x86 version.

I wouldn't recommend it.

the more people that move to x64, the faster people start developing programs for it. You guys shouldnt shoot it down so much.
-
It can work just as well as x86 and better, but you have to wrangle with it.

I've got it in my Dell (see sig) works perfect right out the box.

I use Ubuntu 7.10 x64 for folding.

If you asked me which I'd rather see on my laptop, I wouldn't really care. I don't notice any differences anyways.
But - I do love saying taht I use a 64 bit OS. -

I've never run 64-bit before, but when I got my new Asus U6Sg, I dual booted Ubuntu 64-bit and it ran perfectly out of the box without any problems at all.

I would stay with 32 for compatibility and less headaches....I've never noticed a speed diff with 64 on my hardware.

If the hardware supports 64 bit, use it to be more prepared for the future. In my experience, 64 bit can offer very significant performance increases. I have not experienced any compatibility issues with 64 bit.

I run 64bit Kubuntu 8.04 on my work laptop here (T61), and it runs beautifully. Install nspluginwrapper and you have flash working great, and... that's about it. Even Google Earth runs wonderfully on my machine, and it's also a 32bit app. Everything else is 64bit native to no downside, and you get a nice little performance boost in many things. 64bit Linux is much different than 64bit Windows... it's a hack in Windows. It's just a progression in Linux.
Ubunto 64bit.
