I'm looking for advice as to the method to use to get Beryl up and running on my laptop. I tried the NVIDIA beta driver method described here:
http://wiki.beryl-project.org/wiki/Install/Ubuntu/Edgy/nVIDIA
However, I seemed to get some graphic anomalies and instability after installing those drivers. Couple that with never seeming to actually get Beryl to load (I saw the icon for it, but never saw any of the effects), and I'd say something didn't work right. Is that the method I should be using w/ my setup (GeForce Go 7950 GTX)? Or would I be better off with either the XGL or AIGLX routes?
I'll be doing a complete reinstall of ubuntu, starting from scratch (due to reinstalling Windows... long story, but at least that's working perfectly now), so I figured this is the best time to try to figure out which procedure to take.
Thanks in advance...

Did you right click the Beryl icon and change your window manager from metacity to Beryl?
-
And since AIGLX is included w/ Ubuntu Edgy, I should probably be best off just taking that route? Just do the Beryl install, switch WMs, and bingo? -
Yeah, theoretically that should work.
The guide for that, which you are probably already aware of, is here: http://wiki.beryl-project.org/wiki/Install/Ubuntu/Edgy/AiGLX
I personally used this guide:
http://wiki.beryl-project.org/wiki/Install/Ubuntu/Edgy/XGL
Though, this was of course on my desktop machine using a 7600GS. I didn't have any troubles though. -
Remembering, you need to have XGL or AIGLX running already to use Beryl. If you don't already (which is the impression I got from the opening post) enable one of them first.

yeah... the tutorials should show you through enabling the AIGLX option in the Xorg configuration file.

I installed it using the AIGLX method last night and everything went great except I don't have title bars anymore. When I did the XGL method I had MAJOR graphical issues. The absolute easiest way to install Nvidia drivers is with Automatix. Automatix is a package manager like Synaptic but it lists a bunch of common useful programs that you can put a checkmark by and it will install and configure them all. Its cruise control for awsome.

band-aid, in order to fix that try adding:
Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"
under the screen section in your xorg.conf (sudo gedit etc/X11/xorg.conf) -
OK, so I finally got Ubuntu back up and running properly (see my other thread on this forum for details on what was happening -- now running LILO and everything is good).
I went through the procedure from here:
http://wiki.beryl-project.org/wiki/Install/Ubuntu/Edgy/AiGLX
And things worked better than before (I got the Beryl splash screen this time). However, it seems to encounter some sort of problem, because it ends up restarting X and defaulting back to the default manager (and no Beryl gem visible upon restart).
I didn't do any additional driver install this time. Are there any problems using the default nvidia driver that comes with Ubuntu Edgy? I'm running on a GeForce Go 7950 GTX.
