I am using amarock to sync to 6th gen ipod classic. No album art and lot of song failed to transfer.
Are you having success with ubuntu and ipod classic?

Amarok worked for my 3rd gen no problem -- that said, it's old and not nearly as complex. Did you receive any error messages?

I don't know what generation mine is exactly, I think 5th? It is the one right before this most recent release. It works perfectly for me in Amarok. I don't get album art transfer, but I haven't really investigated that. Don't know if it is a problem or a setting I have to change.
Oh BTW - did you format your IPOD with the Mac filesystem or the Windows one? At least when I got mine last year, I read that Linux can have problems with the MAC file system but works much better, ofcourse, with the Windows one. -
i'm able to use the ipod 80gb classic with gtkpod and ubuntu. by the way, i'm also using musicbrainz (aptitude search picard) for my id3-tagging and cover art.

To a certain extent, yes. I have 95% of the album art with Rhythmbox. However, some of my Chinese songs skip to the next track after about 1min of playback. Now, I'm not sure if it's because of the Linux involvement or just the songs itself. I confuses me greatly.

ok, the little wheel thingy on my ipod popped off and apple offered to replace my ipod with a new one so i upgraded to a 160gb. which meant i had to add all my music back. i ended up using easytag to update and/or force save my id3 tags as i found out (after acquiring more music) that musicbrainz/gtkpod sometimes has issues with id3 versions and saving the id3 tag to a version that gtkpod can read. so, i set easytag to update all my tags to v2.3/utf-8 and instead of using musicbrainz, i used the 'fill tag, rename file/directory, modify field' options instead. basically, you can create a complete id3 tag from scratch just from the song name by using variables, then apply this to the list of how ever many thousands of songs you have and everything is ordered nice and neatly. i also used albumart-qt to download all my cover art and save them as folder.jpg which gtkpod uses as well as embedding the art to the song which is what the ipod uses. after fixing the id3 tag version issue and getting all the folder.jpg files, i was able to see all the songs in their correct albums with correct cover art in my library. after the mp3s were embedded with cover art, i could then see them on the ipod library and coverflow. so if anyone is having isssues and needs help with getting songs on their ipod and getting them to display correctly in their library or their ipod library or the ipod itself for coverflow, just ask.
Ubuntu & ipod - does it work for you?
