Has anyone tried an installation of Ubuntu 9.04 on the Sager NP8662? If so, what worked and what didn't work? And what stuff did you have to fiddle with to get it working correctly? Thanks for any info.

I'll look that up at ExoticPC and report back....from what I know of it's predecessor, no problems for a 'buntu.

You have an Intel wireless card, correct? What series is it? I'm trying to see if anyone has got the Intel 5300 A/G/N to work since it is a little older than the top-line NICs out there.

I don't own the laptop yet - thus the reason why I was posting to see if anyone had tried it out yet. If I already had the laptop, I would have tried it myself.

I think you'll be fine with that Sager...I always consider linux when I buy a laptop, and did the same when I had that one on my short list.

Key hardware for linux is Intel and Nvidia...they are both well support....my webcam even works on my Dell in sig with wxCam....that's a crapshoot though...don't know.

I figured that it would probably work fine with Ubuntu. Thanks for the info. I'll have to give it try once I order it and get it delivered.

Any news on this? I'm looking at buying an np8662 and although i'll be using gentoo, not ubuntu, I'd still like to know how it turned out. Specifically, power management - does it suspend/hibernate/resume correctly? something on the Sager site made me suspicious about that.

I have zero experience with new Sager/Compal notebooks, but there might be some info here that could be of use:
    http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/sager.html
    http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/compal.html

I've also found a couple of problem threads but they are quite old:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=325044
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=954687

Here is a newish Ubuntu bug report, although I'm not sure it's valid since it is probably an NVIDIA problem:
    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/359214

That's about everything I could find with a quick search related to Linux on the NP8662, so it looks like you may just have to try bushwhacking through it.

Well I have a NP8662 with Ubuntu 9.04 x64 and it runs great. Ethernet, wireless, webcam, graphics, etc. everything works. I am able to monitor my temps and choose my cpu frequency. I would say the ONLY thing that bugs is that when on battery, the power management thinks it's on AC power, but it shows the battery discharging. You can still configure some power management features.

quickly, I was going to buy that sager unit, and didn't see a problem myself with basically any distro...I'm sure Ubuntu is fine...and Slackware....some of the others you may have to do something manually with X as the vid card is new....
