Has anyone successfully installed Ubuntu on an ASUS G72 and gotten everything to work?

I am thinking of switching over, my only concern is getting things like the camera to work and the function keys.

The other issue is playing games, but I could always just dual boot to play games.

I just popped over to GentechPC and looked at that unit....should be fine, webcam should work with Cheese....did you get the intel 5300 wifi card with that? If so, that's really good for Linux.

My multimedia keys all work on both my Dells with Ubuntu. Boot up a liveCD and check everything out. Dual booting for gaming is what most of us do about that :)

Yeah I might just have to dual boot. With Windows 7 is it better to have Win 7 as the main OS and Linux as the second?

I know with XP it was a lot easier to dual boot, then Vista made it harder, so I am assuming it's not as easy for Win 7 either.

    What is Cheese?

I am trying the Live CD now.

The function keys should work... I think they're pretty much the same for the G5x and G7x series with the exception of the keyboard backlight hotkeys on some models. I'm dual booting Win7 and Debian on a G51J, I've had no problems dual booting with either grub or grub2 (which I'm using now).

Do I need to install Ubuntu first then Windows 7 or can I make it work with having Window 7 installed on it first like it is now?

Should I shrink my Win 7 partition and the use GParted to partition?

I have installed Ubuntu plenty of times, just always hated the dual boot after Vista.

You should generally install Ubuntu last, since the Windows installer will overwrite GRUB (or any other boot manager). You can shrink your windows partition, but I'd advise that you run a chkdsk /f /r c: and defrag first.

it seems this is the onlyy question asked aabout g72 and inux so i am going to add. I am running linux mint 7.0 dual boot with 7 (it was super easy and it is my first time messing with linux) anyway, I can't get my sound to work on it, that is my only complaint. any suggestions? i have looked at a few different things but can't seem to find out how.

    Edit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
    Code:
    sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
Add this line to the bottom and save
    Code:
    options snd-hda-intel model=g71v
    Then run
    Code:
    sudo alsa force-reload
    Should hopefully do the trick.
