I just downloaded the RC of Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Edition and burned the .iso to a cd. But booting or installing from the cd doesnt work. The start screen of ubuntu loads ad if i click on either Try Ubuntu Netbook edition or Install Ubuntu Netbook edition, it loads onto a black screen wit a blinking cursor and thats it. Noting happens after that. Tis is on my Ideapad netbook (see sig).
Any idea why? I tried googling the issue, but have had no luck so far.![]()

My first thought would be that the .iso is corrupt. Instead of downloading it using your browser, you might want to try pulling the .iso from a torrent. Even though it seems counter-intuitive, your torrent client will do a better job of delivering an intact .iso file.
Another work around would be to install vanilla ubuntu rc and then install the netbook launcher. You can set it to session directly into the netbook launcher which is essentially the same thing.
Check here for torrents:

Not trying to Hi-jack the thread, but is it any good? I'm downloading it at that moment (Netbook edition 10,10) and I want to make sure I wont regret my decision, I don't have the DVD to reinstall windows if I change my minds afterwards!
Thanks! -
I did download the iso using torrent. I just downloaded it again and am experiencing the same issue. It does load on my HP, but not on my netbook. This is weird. :/
Downloading the desktop iso now anyway. -
On which machine specs you wanna load the .iso?
This definately looks like the xorg or the kernel is not able to handle the HW (VGA) you have there. -

At the first boot screen for ubuntu
Hit F6 and then ESC
Delete quiet splash-- and then hit enter to apply the parameters, and try booting. If it doesn't work, post the error message.
If this doesn't get you anywhere you can try F4 to try safe graphics mode.

As a side note, I haven't seen anything in 10.10 to get very excited about. But I'm a Debian user. So I would say that.

Tried both suggestions but still no luck.
I'm giving up for now. But if anyone else does face this issue, please let me knw if you got it to work. Will also read up on the links you posted. Thanks.
I'm only having issues with 10.10 (desktop & netbook editions). 10.04 Ubuntu and Mint 9 work well.
Btw, this is for my netbook (Ideapad S10-3 in my sig.).
Gonna try out Mint Debian in a while.

well if its for the alienware laptop in your sig i would suggest trying something else or a full distro like ubuntu or mint. the good thing is, you can try it without installing because its a live cd. the netbook edition isn't bad for a minimal type of use, but it because of the way its layed out, it really has no "desktop" that you can use. It's all launcher and apps run full screen.

Yeah, that's weird. It's not like your netbook is so new that the linux kernel needs time to catch up. I've had that happen a few times with brand spanking new laptops.
-
I haven't tried it yet but 10.04 works really well on my eeepc. Really, there are a lot of great netbook-friendly distros out there to try in the meantime. Kubuntu netbook is an under-rated distro that should come into its own during the 10.10 release cycle. 10.04 was a little half-baked but it had some neat innovations.

Ya. I cant seem to find out whats wrong. Googled a lot, but still nothing. Now i'm using 10.04 Netbook which is working fine. I'll wait for the final release of 10.10 and give it a shot again.

How about for the Vaio TT, which is 11in, but used the CULV cpu? Would netbook edition be a good choice?
-
Found this finally! Although issue is fixed with usb-creator, it still doesnt work for me.
-
ya it would probably would work fine. if you have a spare 4gb flash drive you can install and try out as many linux versions as you like, all without changing anything on your laptop. Download the linux of your choice in .iso format, then download livelinuxusb or unetbootin, and install the iso to flash drive, then boot off it it. its a great way to try out different distros.

Thank you, I have a 4gb sd card, so that was the plan.

Update:
I upgraded from 10.04.1 to 10.10 Netbook edition, but i couldnt boot into ubuntu using the latest kernal provided (2.6.35...) in the 10.10 iso.
Have also tried creating a bootable CD & USB drive with Maverick 10.10 but still no luck with both. It just wont boot. This is for my netbook (Ideapad S10-3) mentioned in my sig.
I was, however, able to boot into 10.10 on my HP dv7.
Hopefully this will be resolved later on.

Wow. It looks like it's not a graphics problem but some incompatibility the new intel_idle driver has with your system.
From the release notes:
You can use the directions I listed earlier to add this to the boot parameters. -
Thanks!
Got it to boot. Finally!
Ironically, i'm sticking with UNE 10.04. Dont really like the new unity and the fact that it takes up some screen space with maximized applications. -
Not to mention the fact that 1. you can't customize anything and 2. it is slow.
I'm sticking with 10.04 for a while too.
