A couple of weeks before 12.04 will be released. It doesnt make sense. Are users supposed to upgrade to 11.10 for a couple of weeks and then switch again to 12.04? Why could they have some overlap between 10.10 and 12.04???

10.04 just had their last service release, 10.04.4.
I've been using it since it came out, and I've been pretty happy. Never tried 10.10, and I don't care for unity, so I've been holding out and I'm sad that it's days are numbered.
So I definitely know how you feel.

Well, if you don't like Unity, perhaps consider some other related distros, since Ubuntu's committment to that type of "experience" is set. I personally like Xubuntu (using it on my old Averatec), the "parent" Debian may also be worth trying.

Hmm, well according to this page, in 12.04 "classic gnome" will be available via gnome-session-fallback. I might just have to check it out when it's officially released this month then.

I'm thinking of switching over to Scientific Linux (RHEL clone).
