Current Status: Ubuntu 11.10 Beta 2 is out.

Kernel version 3.0.0-11.18, which is now based on the stable Linux 3.0.4 release

The GNOME system, which provides many of the services beneath the Unity desktop shell, has been updated to 3.1.92. Although mine now says it is running Gnome 3.2.0.

    Gnome Shell

I run Ubuntu under the Gnome shell. The graphical glitches I encountered with Beta 1 have been fixed.

My main problem is that if you select auto-login Ubuntu 11.10 boots into the Unity shell even if I have previously already selected the Gnome shell. There was a utility for that in Gnome 2.x which I cannot find in Gnome 3.2.

Release date for 11.10 Final is October 13, 2011.

I have not used the new Ubuntu.

Just curious, can you remove unity?

Let me give it a try.

    - Removing Launcher & Menus
    - Removing Unity 2D
    - Removing Unity 2D launcher
    - Removing Unuty 2D panel
    - Removing Unity 2DP places

Let me reboot and see what happens.

... and I am still here.

Thanks, Corbin, I think that solves my auto login issue :)

Well, it did not solve my auto login issue. But I did get rid of some bloat on my hard drive.

When I auto login, I boot into this desktop - YIKES!

Just log out and login in again and your are back to Gnome 3.2 :)

I guess it is still looking for Unity even if it is not there anymore (and is not an option in the log-in screen).

This useful utility is apparently missing from Gnome 3.

LightDM must have some kind of configuration tool or file.

This may help. You may be able to set gnome-shell to autostart. Since it looks like it is loading a bare instance of gnome, this may work.

You could even create a simple bash script to do this if it don't work. name it shell and place it in ~/:

    Code:
    #!/bin/bash

    gnome-shell
    chmod a+x ~/shell

    Launch with ~/.shell

This option is an added step and really not optimal.

You could also just try a bare boot and open a term and:
    gnome-shell

and make sure it loads the shell. I do however think the first option will work.

Sorry, I did not notice the link. Give me a few minutes :)

I tried creating the Autostart Editor as directed and realized I already had one in my Menu called Startup Applications.

When I edited Autostart Editor, the same command would appear in Startup Applications.

Place the command "gnome-shell" but that did not work out as the Gnome Shell id not autostart.

    Strange.

Try a reboot and open a term and try issuing:

    gnome-shell

see if it gives and error or something. Ubuntu may have renamed it to something else.

If worse comes to worse, I will get the CD and give it a shot.

Yup, I did try to launch the Gnome Shell from the bare desktop. I think it is telling me there is another DE set to autostart.

ok, thats simple (at least should be).

Go back into your autostart thingy, replace gnome-shell with
    Code:
    gnome-shell --replace
This may cause a flicker when the shell starts, no worries though, nothing is wrong.

Yup, that did the trick. Sorry for the delay. I tried the command first in the bare shell via terminal to see what happens. It worked, so I placed the command in auto start. Yup, you see the bare Gnome shell for an instant, than you get Gnome 3.2 :)

    WE ARE NOT WORTHY.

    Thanks so very much.

It would be ironic is someone from Canonical dropped by here and found the Ubuntu 11.10 thread with the first topic being how to remove Unity. :D

    LOL, glad it worked.

I think the Ubuntu devs HAVE got to know by now no one likes unity. Gnome shell is so much better and I have no idea what they where thinking with unity.

Anyway, glad we got it working!

Unity could be okay if you cut it down a bit. The Lenses does not appeal to me. The constant suggestions of apps to download is annoying. And ratings in my menu... WOW.

I'll be giving 11.10 a shot on my netbook here soon.

Any news how it would run on such hardware? 11.04 seems more sluggish than previous versions.

Also, with the HP clickpads, has the right click issue been resolved?

11.10, or maybe I should say Unity runs snappier on 11.10 than 11.04. On a netbook I think Unity 2D should be the better choice. Unity is just starting to get too busy for me. Gnome 3 works perfectly on Beta 2. You may want to give that one a try.

I am not sure about the right-click issue.

I am using 11.04 on my macbook pro 8.1 13" -- wireless is working etc. However, on my install of 11.10; of course it is not working. Not much out there as of yet; to make that work. So I'll keep 11.04 for now! <3 it though!

Ubuntu 11.10 countdown site up: This is the countdown.

I am not sure what that kind of thing is for. I understand they will also be releasing a release candidate in 2-3 days.

What so special about 11.10, that it deserved a special countdown. Well ok, Gnome 3 and umm Linux kernel v3. Or do they do it for all of their releases. They should better do it for an upcoming LTS.

I've made a second attempt at trying Ubuntu's new Unity based UI with 11.10. After removing Unity from the software center, I logged out and after a couple of failed attempts at logging in, I was forced to reboot. I then get nailed with this:

    Code:
    error: couldn't read file.
Press any key to continue ...
I have three other systems running 10.04.3 as my primary OS with XP x64 as the secondary system. I've given Unity a few days' try when I installed 11.04 a couple of months ago but it feels too much like OS X (I can't stand OS X, sorry mac fans). This seems like a great layout for a tablet, but not a PC.

I should note that this test system is being run off a USB hard drive (although I've never had this problem before on this laptop). Anyone else had this problem? Should I have installed gnome-shell prior to 'breaking' this Beta-2 version?

If you removed Unity and Unity 2D, without installing any other desktop environment, that leaves you with no desktop for LightDM to boot you into.

I've just upgraded to 11.10 and I'm using Gnome3 shell. It's better than I expected and it certainly surpasses unity. It's quite snappy and I'm warming up to the extra click. I do miss a lot of my Gnome 2.x panel customization options however.

In other news, Gnome Fallback is a total disappointment. I have a feeling they'll develop it in the future (hell Gnome 3.2x was just released) but as it is Gnome Fallback is not a suitable replacement for Gnome 2.x.

    You don't have to wait.

As long as you run all updates you will be running stable on release.

I just installed Ubuntu today and that is my plan, no need to change anything :D.

I am going to have to reinstall since I am deleting the Windows partition...

Should I download Ubuntu 11.10 final or reinstall 11.10 beta 2 and update? Less bandwidth the better... I am on a 1mbps connection that delivers half the promised speed.

After update you will be same as release (when released).

Running Ubuntu 11.10 right now, seems stable enough. Did all updates that were available and installed AMD graphics drivers. So far so good. Linux noob so I can't really test system for 100% stability. Managed to configure system to play encrypted dvds so I'm happy that's done.

Do not upgrade yet... i'm reinstalling 11.04. Unity keeps freezing, gnome 3.2 isn't complete yet, and the gnome fallback is ugly as all hell. Myriad of problems. Oh well. Maybe in a couple of months...

So far so good. Tried Unity for a bit too see if everything was okay. Know running on Gnome.

Should I remove the Unity bits or can I just leave them there? Was thinking of removing Unity so no updates are downloaded for it.
