Trying out 11.10 on my Sager 5793. It still makes me . This time around I can't use anything but the default nVidia 173 driver on my 8800M GTX or the system freezes up. Unity is just depressing.

    Sigh.

Every time there's a new Ubuntu release I try it in a VM.

Recently, this means that every time there's a new Ubuntu release, I end up deleting a VM image after about 48 hours.

    Sadly, 11.10 is no exception.

Surely the realize that not everyone's desktop needs are best suited by a UI designed for a 10-inch touchscreen, right?

    @ThinkRob

Hope I do not offend, but...

    1) It is the trend. Unity has gone that way, Gnome had gone that way and now Apple has gone that way too. Next year, Windows will follow too.

But seriously, what should a UI bother a power user too much. We really mostly use keyboard short cuts anyway I think.

    2) Why should we care. When I launch the terminal on Ubuntu Gnome 3.2, I just press:

    WinKey - T - E - R - Enter

Maybe we need to accept that the GUI is geared for the novice and the mouse point and click types?

I can happily live with Unity too.

I am pretty sure that as far as Linux users are concerned I fall well below the average techie curve.

Added some extensions to Gnome 3 that increase the functionality of the system, although they sit at weird places. So far so good except that the organization of apps/menus in gnome 3 is, well, bizarre.

a bit OT, I'm not running Ubuntu 11.10 or unity, but..

I just fell into gnome 3 and gnome shell today with the upgrading of packages in debian sid.

I'm running gnome shell on my new Lenovo X220. After screaming some obscenities I finally am starting to be OK with it. Here's what I've found most helpful so far:
    GnomeShell/CheatSheet - GNOME Live!
    Useful keyboard shortcuts

Also, gnome-session-properties still functions as normal (for startup apps) but is hidden from the menus for some (I'm sure brilliant) reason.

On my desktop I am running fallback, since it's where I get most of my work done.

I ran dconf-editor to get to /org/gnome/gnome-panel/ and finally was able to put my panel layout back together.

Power options are now in two places, /org/gnome/power-manager/ and also /org/gnome/settings-daemon/plugins/power

Also the desktop area is useless until enabling /org/gnome/desktop/background/show-desktop-icons

One very positive aspect of 11.10 is that all the nitpicky video problems on my htpc have gone away when I run both standard and high-def video in gnome shell.

gnome-tweak-tool is a savior. And hiding the default apps preferences under 'system info' is... hmm.

The thread did help. I thought I would be able to see the windows partition as well, but I guess that is not happening. Flash isn't working on there either, so I might uninstall ubuntu or leave it for future playing with the system. It seems like a cheap rip off of Mac OS X, no offense intended.

If you install with wubi, the windows partition can only be write accessed by the root (admin) user.

    It's under /media and /host

This is a limitation of using wubi only - if you install the normal way you can see and use the windows partition as a normal user.

For flash support you need to install the flashplugin-nonfree package.

Well, I did the "upgrade" through the notification message that 11.10 was available. I thought, why not. Using this procedure, rather than full uninstall of 11.04 and fresh install of 11.10 will tell me just how well this OS is written.
I did it 2 nights ago and haven't had a problem yet. I need to do some updates tonight. Will keep you informed, but liking it so far.

Can you tell me your thoughts on Unity? Do you find it cumbersome, or intelligently done? I keep hearing that more clicks are required to get to the usual apps.

FWIW, I tired upgrading to 11.10 knowing full well that the big changes from 11.04 to 11.10 would make the upgrade risky. It mostly went okay but there were enough little bugs that I went back and did a clean install which resolved all my issues.

As for Unity, I find that casual users seem to love it. I dislike it because the dash is not customizable. Gnome shell looks far more promising and it is what I'm using on two of my machines.

Funny i try to upgrade when the prompt came up, it got almost all they way there, on that last few install and config stages it spits out an error saying that it cant complete the upgrade. so i dont know what i have, but its something between 11.04 and 11.10  so im doing a clean install.

hard to say, it all really comes down to the function you want and personal taste. i have used both but i have only really used fedora for servers and not personal use so i cant say much on it for everyday use, but it does make a good file server.

well i installed 11.10, at first when i was installing i put in the usb drive it had an option to up grade 11.10 to 11.10 lolz, tried it and it worked for the most part except that the windows manager in Unity would not load so i had not X button. installed it fresh and it worked, still in the process of configing it all up.

Edit: spoke to soon, having brightness problems, on batt, wont stay at setting and starts blinking, plus i cant choose any setting but high or off, it worked just fine in 11.04, if i cant find a fix i may have to switch back

Edit 2: when it does the flashing thing keyboard is none responsive for little.

Really, I can't understand why Canonical can't focus on current releases and bug fixes, instead of releasing new ones every 6 months. This is getting rediculous.

The annoying thing is is that it was fixed with the update to 11.04 so to loss support moving from 11.04 to 11.10 is kinda stupid unless its a kernel bug.

@seiyafan Fedora. I used Fedora 15 for two months between 11.04 and 11.10. My biggest gripes about it were wireless took much longer to connect than Ubuntu (10 seconds or so) and the fonts don't look as nice as Ubuntu even if I tweak the fonts as much as I could. Other than that it is really just a difference of typing "Yum" or "Sudo" in the terminal. I know Fedora is very different from Ubuntu. But since they both have Gnome 3 (Ubuntu running under the Unity shell and Fedroa running under the Gnome 3 shell), if you can use one, you can use the other.

this is true, i will say i like apt-get better then yum, but i dont know why, its just one of those things :p

Im liking 11.10 so far, unity has improve by a lot but is still not there, i love the new login screen, and it does run fast on my netbook then 11.04, but if i cant find a fix for the screen brightness im going to have to switch back :(

EDIT: after some google-fu i found some people on the Ubuntu forms who had the same prob, lucky some one made a patch and now all it good :D

Tried 11.10 on my netbook in sig. Unity 2D is pretty fast compared to it's sluggish counterpart. I like the way USC looks, but not it's performance. Installed Gnome shell and it has many issues with my ATI card -- strange looking fonts, graphical glitches.

That said, Unity is really a failed interface. Went back to 11.04 GNOME. Can not wait for elementaryOS Luna.

Unity would be better if they adopted Mac OSX/Gnome 3 like multi-tasking, by basically displaying reduce sized previews of all your open windows on screen. Basically, if you give rid of the menu bar on the bottom this is probably the best way to multi-task. Also the Dash really needs to be simplified.

All in all, and improved Gnome 3.2 and a fixed (from my standpoint) Unity would operate in about the same way.

When I tried 11.04 I hated Unity. When 11.10 came out I decided to give it an honest shot. I spent a week with it. I used it and it worked the way it is designed to work. The only question that comes to my mind is why I would ever use unity over another desktop environment. It worked, yes, but took longer to find applications and ran slower when starting them up. The thing that bugged me the most with Unity is that the Unity Application launcher sidebar is horrible compared to my XFCE setup that has a second panel on the side. the Unity bar offers almost no customization whatsoever. The prime example is: I don't use multiple workspaces. There may be a hack or something but there was no easy way to remove the workspace switcher from the Unity sidebar. It was just an unmovable icon taking up space on my desktop.

Try a Mac and will see the inspiration for Unity. Try Unity Dash, and that is Canonical's attempt at differentiation.

Wasn't Unity released before the details of OSX Lion were known?

No I am talking about Mac OSX in general and not Lion. Unity feels and looks a lot like my Snow Leopard laptop.

Small thing like having the minimize, expand and close buttons on the left side of the application instead of the more traditional Windows and Linux placement on the right. Little indicators of running app found on the launcher. Unified menu system on the top bar.

But Ubuntu Unity really messed up on multi-tasking. Not as good as Windows, Gnome or OSX.

It is no secret that Mark Shuttlework, Canonical CEO is a big fan of Apple.

So, what do you think about Lenses? Finding files and apps using filters that can be activated by a mouse click.

It looks like Ubuntu is preparing for a future where searching applications and files will be done without a keyboard? As far as I know this approach is unique to Unity.

Sometimes what I would prefer is the ability to "hash tag" documents and pictures instead, like you do tweets on Twitter. This is implemented by Catch Notes, an Android app, and allow you to search for documents by hash tag. This basically means the ability to segregate documents into folders without saving into folders.

This probably goes beyond what can be done by the desktop and into the operating system itself.

All you would have to do is add -data to the files and have it search for that particular -data, nothing to complex.

Interesting. You think hash tagging instead of folder sorting is a bad idea for file management?

odd the word "m e t a" (with no spaces) gets deleted from my posts hmm strange

dont know how well it would work for file management instead of folders, but you could defiantly embed a search function that would find the hash tag in the m e t a-data, searching kinda like it would for a file name.

I personally like a hierarchy of folders but it could work really well for file management, so long as it would work with files on the network and pull them in to a single result, that would make my life easier in some regards.

you could even integrate it in to a DB structure and put that on an ssd and the files on a regular hdd speeding up the loading times becasue it would no longer need to find the file(s) among all others.

    hmm this could get interesting...

Personally, I like the hierarchy of folders for my own use. I have been using that system for 14 years now and actually have my past 10 years of files arrange that way.

I was thinking more in the sense that Ubuntu is targeting the newer users. A generation who will start learning how a computer works to get to use Facebook and Twitter.

Hey guys, I recently upgraded to 11.10 but am having tremendous problems trying to get gnome 3.2 working...

I did a clean wubi install, ran updates, display drivers etc, download + installed gnome shell from software centre, but when I logged into gnome, it looked nothing like what its meant to, the old global menu bar was still there, fonts were missing... is there anything specific I have to do?

    Cheers!

Edit.... from what I understand, I have am ati driver and so gnome 3.2 will be FUBAR on that using propriety drivers... is that correct? Do i have to go open source?

You mentioned wubi, perhaps therein lies your problem. I am running 11.10 on my GX640 with no problems (using the pre-packaged ATI drivers, not the binary installation).

You know, I've thought for quite some time that Shuttleworth was in it for the money. From your engadget link.

If that's true, he stands to make a lot of money from it, and that totally explains why he's been "pushing" Unity. I've had a feeling for a long time that Shuttleworth doesn't really care about open source, as it was more just trying to get his product out to the masses and get name recognition. He goes against the spirit of open source, and this only vindicates my feelings about him.
