I downloaded and installed Ubuntu. Everything works fine, but when I finish rebooting, it fails to see my CDROM. I think it affects windows too, because when I log into WIndows, it won't see my drive. I also installed BF2, but I don't think that should have anything to do with this. Any idea on how I can mount my CD-Rom in Ubuntu? Because if I can, I don't really need to use Windows.

Oh, and I can't seem to get wireless working either. Any help?

I know I'm a bit vague here, so if you have any questions I'll answer 'em. :D

@Amol - there is no reason why an Ubuntu install would affect a Windows one, assuming you can boot into either one perfectly. The only reason they would conflict would be for the bootloading/dual-boot.

Maybe your optical drive is dead? As far as the Wireless Card is concerned, the drive should have automatically installed. Did Wi-Fi work when you tried the Live CD?

You have to install the package "network-manager-gnome" to gt the wifi working, as it is not included by default until 7.04.

Is BF2 the problem, then? When I reinstalled Windows, my cdrom worked. WiFi didn't work with Live-CD

Ly, there is a network manager under "system"; or am I missing something? Any way I can get ndiswrapper running?

no need for ndiswrapper. from the desktop, hit Alt+F2, in the dialog box that pops up, click the "Run in terminal" checkbox, then type "sudo apt-get install network-manager-gnome". This should install the needed packages. Hit Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to restart X, log back in, and you should see a new icon in the notification tray. If you click on it, you should see all available wireless networks and an entry for your wired network.

I believe that network-manager is just a front-end, and not essential to run your wireless connection. For example, when you use your live CD you don't have it, but you still connect to the internet.

What is BF2? Maybe I missed something. If your CD works under Windows, there isn't any reason why it would not work under Ubuntu. Furthermore, there shouldn't be an issue for dual booting, either. Since Wi-Fi didn't work under the Live CD, you should have researched the process of getting it up and running - it's probably nothing more than installing a few packages. Do a search at http://www.ubuntuforums.org/. Punch in your driver and see what Ubuntu pros have done. I still haven't been with Ubuntu/Debian for six months yet, so I'm a bit of a novice...

you don't need network-manager, but it makes things much easier, plus it makes using wpasupplicant transparent, and other niceties.

    This is how it was:

    Windows Vista - CD-ROM detected/working
    Windows Vista + Battlefield 2 (no restart) - CD-ROM detected/working
Restart -> Install Ubuntu - CD-ROM not detected, not mounting. Hence not working
Format; Install Ubuntu - CD-ROM not detected, not mounting. Hence not working
Install Windows XP - CD-ROM works fine.
Install Battlefield 2; No restart - CD-ROM works fine.
Restart -> Ubuntu Install - Same CD-ROM trouble. Hence, back to square one.

Lol, I hope that made sense. :D

Oh, I can't install anything since my CD-ROM is not detected. I'll try changing fstab later on though..

There definitely IS an issue. I had the same problem just trying to run the Live CD on a new ACER laptop (an AMD Turion one) and also a similar late-2006 model Compaq Presario laptop. The whole thing hangs with a kernel panic before it gets anywhere at all, and then when you reboot Windows XP, you've lost your CD/DVD drive for some reason. I tried it a number of times with the same result on both of these laptops. A system restore worked for me in restoring access to the drive on the Acer, but the Compaq needed a fresh reinstall.

Under Applications--> Accessories, open up Terminal and type
    and press enter...

Reboot and the problem should be fixed. You can configure the wireless under Settings --> Administration--> Networking.

Alternatively you could install NetworkManager to use in place of the Networking app. Just open up the terminal and type

    and press enter.

Remember to restart your computer after you install the packages, so they will actually work.

Btw, a small rep point would be nice... :D
