    Hey

I've installed Ubuntu 6.10 a few days ago and it's doing pretty great... except one thing. Whenever I shut down or hibernate... it appears as if my hard drive doesn't stop spinning or something and when the computer actually turns off, I hear a "click" noise coming from the hard drive; the same type of noise if you have to force the computer to turn off. It doesn't appear to happen on my brother's laptop (my old machine, the Asus M6Ne)... is it perhaps a problem with the Intel 915 chipset? I've read about others experiencing the same problem, and they claim it might be a bug with Teardown (the new shutdown protocol introduced in Edgy).

Anyone else experience the same thing? Any ideas?

Read the sticky at the top of this sub-forum; it tells you all about the different distros and their pros/cons. I'd say Ubuntu is a great version of linux for beginners and it's one of the most popular...

Ubuntu and any other distribution with a large support community would be great for beginners. You may also want to look at Linux Mint, which is basically Ubuntu, but modified so that more things work out of the box w/o having to make modifications (media codecs, read/write ntfs partitions, and other nifty features). PCLinuxOS is a good distribution for noobs too.

Ubuntu struggles to hibernate and sleep. I haven't really figured out why, but it doesn't really have to do with ACPI.

I realise that's a problem, but at least Linux is very kind of system resources, so not hibernating isn't a big deal.
