This is going to try and be a guide on how to get everything working fully on a Asus W3J
Graphics:
Got beryl to work on my Asus W3J
First:
I installed the restricted drivers via System>>Administration>>Restricted Drivers Manager
Then was prompted to restart computer.
I also enabled universe and multiverse repositories
enter this in the terminal:
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
you will need to find this group of text make it look like this by deleteing the "#" sign and the space it should look like this:
"
## Uncomment the following two lines to add software from the 'backports'
## repository.
## N.B. software from this repository may not have been tested as
## extensively as that contained in the main release, although it includes
## newer versions of some applications which may provide useful features.
## Also, please note that software in backports WILL NOT receive any review
## or updates from the Ubuntu security team.
deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ feisty-backports main restricted multiverse
deb-src http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ feisty-backports main restricted multiverse
"
then i proceeded to follow this guide exactly as it was shown

Sound:
Sound is working thanks to jaredasch17
I will try to update here as well. post on getting everything working on my W3JLast edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
Can't get sound working anyone have any solutions?
-
Ah thanks man, I appreciate it. Still looking into getting sound to work.
-
Nothing I have tried has got sound in Feisty working on my W3J either.
-
looks like it's impossible with any linux system, ive tried sabayon and fedora, and sound does not work off the bat.
-
I got sound working perfectly on Edgy (6.10), and only had to implement one fix to get it to work. The same fix no longer works in Feisty.
Contro, have you made any progress?? -
No, progress ...
-
Hey guys,
I also was having the same issues with sound and ati video card drivers on Ubuntu Feisty Fawn, so I installed PCLinuxOS and after a few hours of working with it i got both to work perfectly. I went through 4 other distros before i found one that i could figure out the sound on. I really like this distro too, so i suggest giving it a shot if you're becoming enraged with frustration over ubuntu! -
theres a fix for the current sabayon version, they say the latest kernel has better support for our audio, hd-intel
-
This is very disappointing
No sound on fiesty -
-
could not find any help yet..
-
ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
-
I've had the same problem with getting sound to work on my w3j.
-
grrr this is so frustrating after getting beryl and almost everything else to work....the sound won't work help!!!!It worked before in previous versions does anyone have a solution...>???
-
How about the manufacturer's drivers (probably Realtek, no?)?
-
-
ITs been a month and I still can't get either Beryl or Sound working in my W3J.
no matter how many forums I search and guides I follow. -
-
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads...=23&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false
They have linux drivers can anyone confirm if any of these works? -
Intel® 945PM Express Chipset has integrated audio. Sometimes its called Intel HDA. I don't think anything is from Realtek.
-
is the chipset Azalia?
-
-
Actually I think it be the Realtek ALC883 for the W3J. Hasn't solved anything yet though.
-
a quick goole search came up with this
http://www.google.com/search?client...altek+ALC883&sourceid=opera&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8
i was able to skim through them had no time to try them though any one can confirm that any of this works? -
Try this in the terminal:
"sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base"
Now insert "options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1 model=laptop-eapd" into the file you just opened, at the bottom, and reboot. I'm not in ubuntu right now, but I'm pretty sure that's what I did. Sound has been running flawlessly on my w3j since dapper drake (and now feisty). -
Thanks, jaredsch17 - the fix you posted worked perfectly!
With sound operational, the side buttons are the only component of the W3J not functional under Ubuntu; anyone got those working? -
I've never been able to get the side buttons to work either...they just do random stuff (shut off screen, lock screen, etc.).
-
So, the side buttons.
The media buttons (left side) were easy to set using System --> Preferences --> Keyboard Shortcuts, however they only control the default media application (which I believe is Rhythmbox, and is terribly bland). As far as I know, there isn't an easy way of changing this default in Ubuntu - I'm still looking into this, and any suggestions would be welcome.
I did manage to get the media player-startup button (top, left side) to work, thanks to the Ubuntu forums. Set it to launch the music player (using the above Keyboard Shortcuts window), then enter sudo ln -s /usr/bin/amarok /usr/bin/rhythmbox in Terminal. This will change all (?) associations with Rhythmbox to Amarok, or whichever player you enter after the first /usr/bin/. Just remember to uninstall Rhythmbox before doing this.
I'm looking into the hardware-toggle buttons (the right side); they appear to trigger scripts in /etc/acpi, though I need to research a great deal more before I start messing around in there. -
Thanks for the help with the side buttons, they seem to be working nicely. The right buttons aren't quite worth the risk to me at the moment, I'm just happy to have my multimedia buttons back
-
You are the man! -
Good to know that your media buttons are operational, jaredsch17! Mine, on the other hand, took a bit more work. I was unable to change the default music player (which is, frankly, a Ubuntu design flaw - speak up in this thread if you want that changed) but there turned out to be an easy alternative (for Amarok, at least). Simply disable the media functions in Keyboard Shortcuts, then in Amarok go to Settings --> Configure Global Shortcuts - from there you can set play/pause, stop, and skip (as well as many other functions).
Five down, five more to go. -
This thread has helped me tremendously.
Do you guys have the scroll working on the track pad? -
. I believe it involved editing the xorg.conf file, then resuscitating Ubuntu using the command line (it crashed the GUI; I think this is tied to the X1600/feisty problems). If I have time, I'll see if I can find the guide I used - unless anyone else has a more reliable technique?
-
excellent sound works had to reinstall ubuntu last line when you type in
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
somehow got deleted! now if I can get ubuntu to play my korean and japanese music I will be in business. -
anyone have a step by step solution for getting hibernation to work?
-
as well as better battery life improvement tips.
-
I recently ran into an issue where ubuntu was screwing up really badly first the nic would not work then it would complain about the window manager not coming up. I was dual booting my w3j with windows xp and Ubuntu fiesty(7.04). The problem apparently was windows powermanagement on my NIC. I have put together a "guide" on how to fix this.
Thanks tedu

EDIT : THere is a link to the ENVY program in Lysander's Ubuntu Guide - see the Linux Info Booth sticky. -
Also Maff, a great page where I learned bunches about Ubuntu was Ubuntu Guide...it answers nearly everything you need to get started.
For particular problems, I'd go to the Ubuntu Forums, if you haven't already. They have an extremely active and helpful community there. -
having problems can anyone post their xorg.conf file after a fresh install of ubuntu on their W3J or after getting beryl to work please..?
-
Ok I am now running the latest Version of Ubuntu...Gutsy Gibbon I will be posting an update on how I upgraded and what problems I encountered after the upgrade l8r today hopefully.
