at this moment, i am attempting to boot Ubuntu 7.04 from a Kingston 2GB USB stick
i get a \blinking white dash-bar on the top left of a black screen. I rebooted several times and left the dash-bar blink for over 30 minutes... it's still blinking
.. what to do.... what to do... hmmmm

How'd you make the USB stick bootable? Did you just copy the ISO file to the stick? You really should use the CD to install it unless you really know what you're doing. Making a bootable USB drive isn't nearly as easy as making a bootable CD.

thanks alot for replying Pitabred,
. i recorded the iso image to a cd
. booted ubuntu from the cd
. programmed the USB key from the ubuntu terminal
. restarted to windows and pasted all the extracted ubuntu files unto the usb
. booted the x24 from the USB with a 128mb usb with HP booting utility, it worked
. removed the 128 and inserted the 2GB Ubuntu USB stick and this is when i had my black screen with the blinking > > > - < < < dash-line
~
i just realised i need to reprogram the usb key within the ubuntu terminal and try the whole process again and try to boot ubuntu from the usb through several computers... thx for helping me refresh my thought... i'll proceed to do that within the next few days and will update the forum in case anyone runs through a similar situation...
merci ! / thanks ! -
just an update:
. i am currently transfering the Ubuntu 7.04 files onto the 2GB Kingston USB stick
. earlier today, i had Ubuntu booted from the CD and i programmed the 'booting sequence onto the 2GB Kingston Stick using instructions from the internet
i am doing all of the above with Windows XP Professional installed on a desktop -
ok.. just tried to boot from the 2GB Kingston Data Traveler USB stick.. and arrrghh.. for the 2nd time: i get a blinking >> - << dash bar.. sigh : (

i would rather boot from SD card than USB stick. I think it is faster and easier to manage
-
why are you trying to use the USB stick so badly? if you already burnt the cd with the iso file why not use that instead?
and, 7.10 is out today -
hey.. thank you all for your replies.
I am now on Ubuntu 7.10updated from 7.04 !
I loaded DSL (damn small linux... no joke here... it's real.. google it) and just used the same instructions as installing DSL yet instead of loading the embedded DSL files.. i loaded the Ubuntu 7.04 files and it worked !
I had many error messages during booting from the USB yet in some weird way.. everything is working absolutely fine ! I installed Ubuntu after it took 20 minutes to load it could take up to 40 minutes to load the first time... and then i clicked on the install from the desktop... then after the installation was complete.. i tested the OS without the USB key and it worked.. then i updated it from the system update.
I am very satisfied right now. -
i did not purchase an external CD-Rom drive for my X24
that's why i had to boot from the USB only.. i appreciate your reply... thanks alot !
