    Hi all,

New to Ubuntu and have it on my desktop computer. The external USB wireless adapter I had is incompatible with Ubuntu (trust me I searched on it and many confirmed same problem)

So my question is what is a good inexpensive USB wireless adapter that is compatible with Ubuntu 7.10 no problem?

Second question kind of unrelated is what is an average boot time. On my windows machine about 30-40seconds and i'm in. But on my desktop which is only slightly slower it takes atleast 3 minutes sometimes 4 or 5?

    Thnx :)

This works out of the box. Concerning the boot time... It's not normal that it takes that much time on my old laptop 1.8ghz single core turion 64, 512 of ram and a 5400rpm hd it took more or less 30 seconds to boot... I would suggest going into the verbose mode during the boot to see what is halting the process. Follow the instrucion in the "modifying grub options" part here.

Have you ever checked the following links?:
    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/WirelessCardsSupported
    http://linux-wless.passys.nl/

I recommend the Netgear WG111 v2 (make sure it's VERSION 2) or Belkin 7050 v4.0 (make sure it's version 4). The Netgear I mention has the Realtek RTL8187 driver/chipset and the Belkin model has the zd1211b chipset and 1211rw driver. I have the Belkin usb wirelss adapter and I've already had it work (without much trouble, ultimately) in Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Fedora 8 and Mepis 7.

The slow bootup could be a number of things.
