    Ubuntu 7.10 Networking Issues

    network :
    - 1 (one) Server running Ubuntu 7.10 (desktop ed.)
    - 1 (one) notebook running Windows XP Home
    - 1 (one) notebook running Ubuntu 7.10 (desktop ed.)

The Server was previously running Windows Server 2003. I wiped out the HD and installed Ubuntu 7.10.

    problem:
    - the Ubuntu Server has two shared folders (same folders as with the Windows Server 2003 setup)
    - the XP Notebook has no problem connecting to the shared drives on the Ubuntu Server. i did zero configuration on the server other than "sharing" the folders in the specific folder's Properties. at this point, the XP box has no problems. 2 way communication between XP Notebook and Ubuntu Server is 100% operational
    - the Ubuntu Notebook cannot see the Ubuntu Server much less the shares. Ubuntu Notebook can see itself and the XP Notebook on the LAN. the Ubuntu Server is not visible.
    - the Ubuntu Server cannot see itself nor the shares on the LAN. Ubuntu Server can see the XP Notebook and the Ubuntu Notebook on the LAN

    fault isolation:
    - i can ping both ways between Ubuntu Server and Ubuntu Notebook successfully
    - the only thing that has changed is the OS on the Server. everything else (computers, LAN topology, cabling, etc etc) is identical to pre-Ubuntu-on-server install.

I've done the research and there is no satisfactory answer out there (becoming clear this is S.O.P. for the linux/open-source community). All I want is to be able to communicate between Ubuntu boxes. This is the only problem on the LAN anywhere. All computers can browse internet, XP and Ubuntu can talk to each other, but for some reason, Ubuntu cannot talk to Ubuntu.

I'm not at all interested in researching this any further (going on 5 hours now) so hopefully I can get some help here. Otherwise, I'm going to put Windows Server back on the machine since it "just works" out of the box.

    thanks for tryin'

i figured after 5+ hrs, it had already taken enough of my life away.

the box is now rockin' win XP pro and it's awesome. folders shared easy. ubuntu and windows boxes have no problem seeing the server.
