Well I received my Gutsy Gibbon CD in the mail today and am now typing this message via Firefox on Ubuntu (running from CD, but still). I know I read a lot about how the BIOS on this laptop prevented Linux use, but it seems to work fine for me... We'll see but so far it's been great!
Now all I gotta do is create a new partition and install it to the HDD!![]()

Do ya'll know if the 64-bit Ubuntu will work on this platform (details below)? I tried booting that from the CD and it froze while loading and also wanted to load in low-graphics mode... Any ideas?
I think I'll install the 32-bit version in the mean-time as I have no need for 64-bit capability. -
Hehe. That's the bad part of Gusty. For Intel base HP, you need use 32 bit i386. For AMD based, I only can boot using AMD64 version. I don't know why 7.10 does like that. At least, my V3000Z only boot on AMD64.
Well, there is really nothing to complain. Everything works just fine. I made audio, wifi finally worked. -

Hmmmm, any idea why I cant get it to install on my HDD? I have a FAT32 5.5gb partition set up for it... When I try, it says something like: Cannot access root directory. IDK why it wont install (32 bit version...).

The exact verbiage is:
"No root file system is defined.
Please correct this from the partitioning menu."
Where is the partitioning menu? Is it even in the install process? -
You must have missed it, DMAN. The process offers three choices worded something along the lines of the following, if my memory serves correctly:
1. To install automatically with Windows in the same partition, but using empty space (my own choice - 50% to Ubuntu)
2. To format and install without Windows
3. To format manually, setting up partitions yourself.
I believe it also gave in the warnings about setting up, that Windows or other OS could be lost in the process if your aren't careful. Really wasn't hard, though. I managed. LOL -

No, there's no choices like that - theres:
Guided - Use Entire Disk
Manual
I chose manual and IDK why I can't get it to install. I created a 540mb linux-swap partition and everything... -
Are you sure those are the only two choices? I could be confused, I suppose; there are LiveCD's for quite a few different distros floating around the house, but I've only installed Ubuntu, Sabayon and PCLinOS. No major install differences really pop out in my mind, though.
In any case, I wish you well with this. -

Nevermind!!! I GOT IT!
I needed to format the partition as a linux-compativble format...
Now I'm just having problems with my video card driver... Anyone have any experience with the 8400m drivers? -
It should be a matter of opening a terminal and running the following command:
sudo aptitude install nvidia-glx-new
That is provided you have an active internet connection. Also, you may need to disable usplash to get your system to boot properly outside of single-user mode. Run:
sudo nano /boot/grub/menu.lst
Scroll down until you find the entry for the latest kernel, non-recovery mode (should be the first defined boot option). Delete the word "splash" after it, save and exit, and reboot. -

Yeah its working now. I wasn't really connected to the internet (my Ethernet switch got turned off)...
-
I got a random question... Why did you order a cd when you could have downloaded the distro in what, tops a couple hours, probably less than a hour? I mean you have some speedin internet... And you could have gotten the whole DVD easy.

IDK... I really didnt have time to mess around with this stuff when I actually ordered the disc. This was perfect timing since I'm going on a week break over thanksgiving...

I know this is an old thread but I installed the same Ubuntu on my dv2500t and my sound isn't working and was wondering if you got yours working. Thanks.

It works, but I didn't do anything to make it work - it just worked when I installed Gutsy... I'm not very linux-fluent yet, so I can't really help you. Sorry bud.

Check in windows what brand sound card you have... I have conexant HD audio. IDK if that makes a difference, or even if HP sold this laptop with another brand, but its worth a shot.
-
Yeah. I got it working. When I first installed Linux it worked out of the box but I had to reinstall it. The second time it didn't.
I fooled around with some settings and it seems to work now, though I honestly don't know what I did.
What I do know is that the mute was NOT on. -
i have a dv6500t and i was wondering if anyone was able to get the 4956AGN wireless to work. it sometimes work and it somtimes dont. i use GUTSY and when ever i try to connect, all i have to connect to is "lo" i get "eth0" if i am on ethernet and i rarely get "wlan" which is wireless... seriously i hve a strong connection if i am on vista, but when i boot into ubuntu, my wireless dont work for some reason! why is that?
-
-
it was workin out of the box, but now it wont even work anymore. all it says is it is connected to "lo" before it was connected to "wlan0" whats wrong,..
-
Do you see any driver in the restricted devices manager?
-
