I think almost all users using ubuntu would know this by now. 2 days left until the ubuntu 8.04 is launched. I would be installing it soon.![]()

I wouldn't upgrade from my 7.04 install because it's working perfectly and it's a PITA to do a new install. But this is the LTS release. It will be supported through April 2011 for Desktop edition. Woo hoo!
Greg -
WOOT! Hardy Heron FTW!
-
Yes I am waiting now for the official release since I accidentally wiped out my GRUB upgrading vista.
-
-
Well, I'll have to do some testing!
-
-
if you have problems with the easy stuff like wiping out grub, here's a reference on how to upgrade instead of doing a clean install to keep you on track. it comes with pictures!

I'm currently using the 8.04 RC....no reason to redownload is there? I mean sudo apt-get upgrade make it the same right? I think so, just checking.
-
-
I thought so, just dizzy from Distro Hopping. lol I'm putting together a VirtualBox non-free how-to for Hardy Heron for this forum as the file changes have changed a bit. I've collected bits and pieces from different sources, need to gel it together. I have to print from a virtual machine so to me it's a big deal
Usb is working on Hardy btw (for me).
Edit: The how-to is up for anyone in need of it. -
That's one of the things that I hate the most about VirtualBox - the lack of USB support in the free version. Just because of that, I keep another XP (VMware) virtual machine. For those interested in a tutorial for installing the free VirtualBox, it's available here -http://www.fsckin.com/2007/10/29/how-to-run-microsoft-outlook-natively-on-linux-using-virtualbox/
-
There are 2 free versions, one with USB and one without. Just don't use the one in synaptic, download it from their site.
-
the non free version can be added to your repos too with the installation of a key -
Wow, I didn't know that. I'll have to check that out!
-
Does anyone else think the official torrent is rather slow at 120KB/s? It took an hour and a half to download "ubuntu-8.04-desktop-i386.iso" (699MB). When I got version 7.04, it took 5 minutes thanks to the blazing fast speed of 1,850KB/s.
Anyway, i'll continue seeding at 1.8Mbps until I get a share ratio of 2. -
-
Well, it's released so i have to update my guide.
-
I'm updating right now.
-
Please remember to use the torrent links to ease strain on the main servers! Currently grabbing i386 desktop/alternate and amd64 desktop/alternate. I won't be able to install them until tomorrow so I'll just spend today backing up and prepping.
-
I'm going to do an 'upgrade' right now....started off with RC, curious how many if any files will update.
-
I can't even download header updates, servers are bogged....try again later...
EDIT: got the updated headers, did a sudo apt-get upgrade, nothing changed...already had final (I started out with Hardy RC) -
It seems to me that in order to polish their suspend, hibernate and general stability, Ubuntu developers should dedicate some time to video drivers. They work, but resuming power states is just as unpolished as back when I used 6.06. Hopefully kernel-based mode setting will help out when it is integrated in to Linux, too.
-
It seems their cpu throttling is pretty good, don't really have heat issues...but, yes, I wish that was polished up, and in the case of Kubuntu, Adept Manager which has crashed for years I think....most of us install and use synaptic which is better anyway.
-
My Ubuntu install heats up my laptop a bit more than Vista, but not too bad...
-
Thanks for the info about the latest release, i'll be installing Ubuntu on my XP computer probably as the main OS and get rid of XP and call it my Linux desktop.
I'll need some help though so i'll post about that soon.
-
-
Maybe it is but I'm doing it for various important reasons that i'll put in my thread asking for help so i hope you linux masters can help a linux noob like me.

The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
Is the servers just clogged because I am doing the upgrade method and it is downloading the files and its going 40-60 KB which says it will take 2-5 hours.
-
The servers are really bad, so I actually used the torrents and got around 150kb downloading on average.
Well, this is my first time using Linux, in general, and I have everything working on my Dell M1530.If only I knew how to use it and install stuff.
-
The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
Its going 80 now but whatever, Lost is about to come on. Yeah I'm pretty new to it too and haven't had much of a chance to use it alot because of finals but its been a nice change from windows.
-
-
Install stuff?
Add/Remove programs of course! There are hundreds of programs there -
-
Unlike Windows, which i really just remove programs lol.
-
Okay, I'm really getting pissed off at Apple. Apparently their motherboards can only support one particular type of wireless card between revisions. Meaning, I'm stuck with my current Broadcom POS.
-
The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
Wow this is frustrating. The download stops randomly and then goes fast and stops again. ITs not my connection and I can't download torrents on the university network.
Its taken almost 3 hours just to download it. AHH! -
-
Curse those bloody servers.
-
The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
6 minutes.
Nice to see you zoid. C90 and Linux= ownage. Bad season for our gators but it was expected. Semester is over next thursday thank god.
-
Mine upgraded itself from 8.04 RC to the final release a few days ago.
-
So, is everyone's Firefox 3 as ugly as mine?
(running first time from livecd, just had a long battle to learn how these widgets thing work.)
Plus, how sad, i just selected the desktop effects i would like to use and looks like it didn't even care about it... After a first black screen (when i hoped it would work) it came back and not it does absolutely nothing when i mark/unmark the effect boxes. -
Haven't installed it yet, but music/sound, wireless and screen resolution (nVidia w/1920x1200) all work great using the Live CD without any sort of configuration! Never before have I been able to get wireless to work with a CD version of any distro.
-
Just downloading hardy heron..
It's gonna be the first time i've ever seen a linux interface(I've been used to windows for the last 10 years).. And i'll probably need a lot of advice from you guys, i've already checked out the stickies and i've made up my mind to dual boot with windows vista..
Allocated 18 gigs of space (tht will do right?)..
But I'm just experimenting with it as i hardly have any use for linux(All a high school student needs is a crappy windows os with a c++ compiler)
But I'm curious to explore linux so im giving it a try now -
Btw can u guys post the torrent link?
Greatly appreciated,
Sathya -
Main Download page: http://releases.ubuntu.com/8.04/
LiveCD Versions: These contain the cd's that you can run live on your current OS.
i386: http://releases.ubuntu.com/8.04/ubuntu-8.04-desktop-i386.iso.torrent
AMD64: http://releases.ubuntu.com/8.04/ubuntu-8.04-desktop-amd64.iso.torrent
Alternate Versions: These contain text-based installation, if for some reason the Live CD does not work for you.
i386: http://releases.ubuntu.com/8.04/ubuntu-8.04-alternate-i386.iso.torrent
AMD64: http://releases.ubuntu.com/8.04/ubuntu-8.04-alternate-amd64.iso.torrent
If you're not sure which one to choose, download the i386 version. Live CD should work well, but for some, it may not run on your computer so you would need the text-based installation version (Alternate version)
I got download speeds of around 500kb/sec so I was able to download the iso in less than half an hour. Beats going through the ubuntu servers, which is a complete gridlock right now. Also, if you plan on tweaking your distro, I would recommend waiting till this upcoming weekend as the updating process is also really slow... unless you can download the packages elsewhere.
Also, 18gigs should be alright for exploring your LInux needs, although I would recommend you give more so it forces you to try out linux. I would also recommend when installing ubuntu to keep your root parition (labeled '/') separate from your /home partiton. This will allow you to explore a lot more linux distributions later down the road as you can format your / parition and install a different flavor and your /home partition (with all your settings) will stay intact. And there is a c++ compiler in linux. I believe its in the package 'build-essential.'
Cheers! -
Thanks sonnyg95 for the torrent links!
I'm getting download speeds of around 30kb/s(cause im on a 256kb/s
)!!
Hopefully it'll be done by morning so tht i can have a crack at linux!
