    Every time I try to boot Ubuntu, I get this error message:"The greater application appears to be crashing, attempting to use a different one." I can't boot up because of it, the message just loops over and over. Anyone have any ideas?

    Did you try recovery mode?

    Hey, did you upgrade from 7.10 or did a clean install? I read somewhere that upgrading sometimes can be more painful than actually doing a clean install (with regards to Hardy because its still in beta), especially if your box is customized (added tons of software, changed gdm theme, etc). Also, did you mean "greater" or "greeter?"

    Regardless, you can try this link. I believe it has the fix.

    thanks, I'll try it. Ya it's a clean install, the only thing that I changed was the appearance.

    I updated 8.04 today and the update/upgrade screwed up my install. I guess I could have fixed everything but I think I will wait until they release the final version in a few weeks. 8.04 is going to be a solid release but it's not quite as stable as I thought.

    Going back to play around with Mint KDE for the next couple of weeks.

    Try this

    1. first reboot your computer into maintenance mode/recovery mode.

    2. open /etc/gdm/gdm.conf-custom by entering the following command

    sudo vim /etc/gdm/gdm.conf-custom (or sudo nano if you prefer nano or dont have vim)

    3. press i to enter into insert mode. Locate the following line and comment it by inserting a # in front of the line.

    GtkModulesList=gail:atk-bridge:/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/modules/libdwellmouselistener:/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/modules/libkeymouselistener

    4. press the Esc key and then type in :wq to save and quit the editor.
    (to save in nano is different, the keys to save are shown on the bottom of nano window)

    5. type sudo init 6 to reboot that should fix the problem
