well, this is the 6th laptop i've installed fedora or ubuntu on and to get things going the steps/concepts have been pretty much the same. anything that did not work out of the box eventually worked with a little prodding. the only problem i ran into was with setting up raid0. took a couple of hours due to the install taking so long over 2 250gb drives. also, i've never installed raid in ubuntu, much less linux. specs are as follows:

    # Ubuntu Alternate 8.04
    # Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T7250
    # Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN (802.11a/g/n)
    # 2GB PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM
    # 500GB Total Space (250GB x 2)
    # 8x DVD (+/-R double layer) drive
    # 17.0" diagonal widescreen TrueLife TFT LCD display at 1920x1200 (WUXGA, Glossy)
    # 256MB nVidia GeForce Go 8600M GT
    # 2.0 megapixel webcam
    # Bluetooth version 2.0 plus Enhanced Data Rate (EDR)
    # ExpressCard slot w/Remote Control (ExpressCard/34 and Express Card/54)
    # 5-in-1 media card reader

finally got all the goodies working and as an added bonus, the extra remote i got from the m1330 i bought from josh on here works with the 1720 so now i have a remote for each laptop. also, world of warcraft looks pretty damn nice in full settings. the display supports 1080p so streaming or local hd content has become a much better experience.

also, if you plan on putting in your own second drive, it was easy to get the parts shipped for free from dell. i chatted online with tech support and stated that my laptop did not come with the hdd2 carrier. actually, none of them do... they sent me two carriers by mistake and told me to keep the extra one as it would cost them more if i shipped it back. the part numbers you need to request are:

    C7586: HD Carrier No. 2 QTY 1
    XK231: HD Interposer QTY 1
2864D: Carrier to HD screw QTY 4
63PDH: Carrier to bay screw QTY 3
