Hey everybody, I've searched google and I've been trying to figure out if my new Dell M1530 will run Ubuntu at full graphic settings with the following unit specs.

    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T6600 (2.2GHz/800Mhz FSB/2MB cache)
4GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz (2 Dimms)
High Resolution, glossy widescreen 15.4 inch LCD(1440x900)
    128MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8400M GS

I have a older desktop with a Athlon xp2400+ proecessor, 1 gig of ram and a old ATI 128mb Radeon 8500LE card and I wasn't able to run Ubuntu 8.10 with all the full graphic interface.

Any ideas? Just wondering if it will, if not I'll have to change my order.

You mean Compiz Fusion with full graphic settings?
If so, yes, that configuration will do fine.
Check the Ubuntu forum for user experiences.
    Cheers.

Even my old Radeon 9600 with 64MB of dedicated video memory can pretty much max out Compiz Fusion. For questions regarding compatibility, searching Ubuntu's forums would have yielded plenty of results. For one, it turns out that Dell has customised 8.04.1 for many of their popular models, including yours. Linky

Yes, Compiz Fusion, didnt remember the name. When I had it installed on my desktop, trying to drag windows with that 'jello/bouncy' effect, it got very choppy and I knew it was my hardware.

Well I ordered the Dell M1530 with Vista SP2 and I'm in Canada. The only one I can order with ubuntu is the Dell M13. So once the laptop comes in, I want to go ahead and install Ubuntu 8.10 that I have on cd.

That was my concern because I love ubuntu/kubuntu, I use vista daily at work so I want ubuntu at home and love the graphical interface.

I was just worried my hardware specs wouldn't work good and that I'd have to change my order to the 256mb Nvidia card.

    No worries.
When it has arrived, check this how-to, with screenshots, on how to dual-boot Vista/Ubuntu. If that's what you want of course.
    Cheers.

Thank you, I'll look into that link later tonite.

I think I even found the problem I was having with my desktop, this guy describes the issue as compiz being choppy and whatnot, very similar to what my desktop issue was. But my card is fairly old and has problems with dark colors sometimes so hopefully the dell will run ubuntu 8.10 with the full max compiz settings fine.
