I have installed Ubuntu 8.10 on an old desktop and a T61. I am getting weird lock ups where the Caps lock and scroll lock lights keep flashing. The only remedy is to hard reset the computer. The problem seems random as it occurs after 5 minutes or after a few hours. I am using open and closed sourced Nvidia drivers.
Anybody know what is going on?

sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
Add the option noacpi to the end of the boot line for the kernel you are using. Perhaps this will solve the problem. -
I fixed my problem. I had a buggy wireless network card (ACX 111) installed in my desktop and a network peripheral from my T61.
I tried loading 8.04 and got the same problem. I did not have the problem in 7.10. I removed the problematic hardware.
Ubuntu 8.10 seems to be running fine now. -
Ubuntu works fine for me to. Instead of spending 3+ hours trying to get Vista to work with my laptop, Ubuntu worked fine from the start. sound worked fine, quicklaunch buttons work fine.
The only problem I had with Ubutno is during the setup, it raped my D drive and stole most of the of free space to create a partition for Ubuntu. Isn't there a way to control how many space Ubuntu takes from a certain drive during installation? -

Find yourself an old desktop PC that you can practice on. Read some guides, watch some YouTube videos, whatever, then do it yourself. Don't try to manually partition and mount the drives for the first time on your primary PC!
The only way I'll install Ubuntu now is manually. I figured out the mounting stuff by trying and failing a few times on an old PIII desktop. No stress that way. Once I'd done it a dozen times I had the confidence to try it on our new laptop. I ran into some hurdles and woulda made a mess out of it if I hadn't practiced. -
(man, were my parents mad when they came home to a computer which wouldnt boot)
