I have a screen problem with my function keys... (Brightness mainly).
Whenever I turn the brightness higher or lower on my Gateway Laptop, the function box will be inverted (Couldn't attach pictures, so I uploaded to ImageShack.)
This problem did not exist in the previous Ubuntu editions, nor in Vista or XP.
I also tried reformatting and installing Ubuntu 9.04 again, but the problem did not go away.
If I use the Take Screenshot program, the black little inverted box won't popup.

P.S. I think I posted this in the right section :D

Have you tried switching the x64 and the x86 versions?

What's the make/model of the video card?

No, apparently, I haven't. I'm using the x64 one right now because from my "knowledge" from Windows (I don't have much), x64 can allocate all of my 4 GB, while x86 can only allocate up to 3-3.5 GB. I don't know if it's the same with Ubuntu x86, so yeah.

Apparently, my video card is ATI xPress 1150, which is now categorized as "Legacy" from ATI... (It's only a year old -___-, I hate you ATI!)

Uhg... it definitely looks like a driver problem, are you using the open source one that is the default driver, or are you using the proprietary ATi driver?

Uhm, I think it's the open source one in Ubuntu 9.04 and I believe there is no proprietary ATI Driver for the Legacy drives in 9.04 so far.

P.S. - I checked the... Hardware Drivers in the System Tab and nothing was there. I think I did it right. :O

P.S.S. - Ubuntu 8.10 would have the propietary ATI Driver and there wouldn't be this problem. But Ubuntu 8.10 was slugglish to me, just like how XP was sluggish to me and Vista wasn't O_O. 9.04 is very fast.

OK, if you were using the ATi driver I was going to say to go back to the regular one... but since you're already on that, I started digging for bugs. This is all I could find so far. Check the screenshot, it's a bit similar, but it's not got the inversion at the top left like in your screenshot.

Edit: That bug is massively old LOL... I am still digging here:

Lol, I was looking at that. :D Thanks alot :D Let's search together O_O
Oh, I recall that it happened once when I was in Windows XP, and the only way I solved it was by reformatting it. Reinstalling drivers did not help while I was in XP.

Should I post pictures on how the box looks regularly? And when Ubuntu boots up, there's a screen where everything messes up. I'll take those two pictures after I eat dinner.

More pics can't hurt ;) You might check your /var/log/Xorg.0.log for any error messages (after this happens).

Nothing stands out from your log for me, there are no error lines - they start with (EE). There are a few warnings about your LCD but I am not sure they matter. Can you post your /etc/X11/xorg.conf maybe there is an option in there that needs a tweak. Otherwise you might want to submit a bug report  to Ubuntu (on launchpad) with your screenshot(s), Xorg.0.log, xorg.conf and the output of lspci -vvnn

    I see...

    Here's my xorg.conf
    Code:
    # xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
    #
    # This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
    # values from the debconf database.
    #
    # Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
    # (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
    #
    # This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
    # if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
    # package.
    #
    # Note that some configuration settings that could be done previously
    # in this file, now are automatically configured by the server and settings
    # here are ignored.
    #
    # If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
    # again, run the following command:
    # sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

    Section "Monitor"
    	Identifier	"Configured Monitor"
    EndSection

    Section "Screen"
    	Identifier	"Default Screen"
    	Monitor "Configured Monitor"
    	Device "Configured Video Device"
    	SubSection "Display"
    		Virtual	1280 800
    	EndSubSection
    EndSection

    Section "Device"
    	Identifier	"Configured Video Device"
    EndSection

    And my... lspci -vvnn.

Looks like you're using the default xorg.conf, you can try a few of the tweaks listed here:
    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver#Tweaking%20The%20Driver

Specifically (under the Device section of your xorg.conf):
    Code:
            Option "DynamicClocks" "on"
and maybe AccelMethod and TripleBuffer... not sure if they are going to help, but maybe worth a shot. You can also add this section:
    Code:
    Section "DRI"
            Mode 0666
    EndSection
You have to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf as root so you can hit Alt+F2 and type gksudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

It would be PCI:1:5:0 but you shouldn't need to worry about that option unless X can't probe for it automatically.

Apparently, I did the tweaks and it didn't work. Well, it said that the current graphics blah blah can't work. Would you like to go back to the previous configuration? And I did o_O

Hm, I'm not sure any of them was a 'fix' per se anyways... just worth a try. I think it's probably a bug, but I never found a bug report that matched yours exactly.

Make sure you're up to date (with either aptitude at the command line or Synaptic Package Manager from the System menu). There could be an update for the xserver-xorg-video-ati package (or something else) that fixes the problem.

Edit: In Synaptic click Reload then Mark All Upgrades then Apply (if Apply is disabled it means there are no new updates to apply).

No new updates to apply, oh well. I guess I won't use the brightness setting for a while. More battery waste grrr.

I cant figure out how to run Ubuntu 9.04 in higher screen res.

It is only currently allowing me to run in 800x600 or 800x480.

Im running it on os x with virtual box. It lets me run full screen in virtual box, but then it is only small 800x600 res. is there anyway around this?

    Thanks
