If I were to upgrade to 9.04 from 8.10, would I lose all the customizations I made to firefox as well as the rest of the system? I know that the answer is likely a resounding yes, but I just finished tweaking my 8.10 from my install last week and want to know if there's more fun/pain coming from around the corner.

I'm a first time Linux user, but it's been smooth sailing so far. Thanks guys for your help.

Depends on whether you have a separate /home partition. If you do have one then you can choose to reinstall the system without formatting /home. If you do not you can always make a backup of your hidden folders in /home which deal with most user configurations.

Proxima, he is talking about an upgrade, not a reformat.

To answer the OP's question, upgrading from Intrepid to Jaunty would not delete your settings. However, it is strongly recommended that you back up your data before doing the upgrade. Although most people report a smooth upgrade, my experience with Ubuntu upgrades has been fairly unreliable.

Do you have a separate /home partition? if so, back it up and do a clean install while NOT formatting your /home. Your settings will be there, along with settings for other programs that, when reinstalled, will return to how you had them. I wouldn't do an upgrade, I've always had glitches, and doing a clean install won't take you any longer. FWIW
