Well, I see a lot of common questions being asked in this section, and I think a little list of tutorials would be good for users new to Linux.
I'm going to give a list of Ubuntu links, because it is currently the most popular distribution, as well as being one of the more user friendly OS' out there. It's also going to focus mainly on the x86 architecture.
DOWNLOAD/INSTALLATION
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download - Download Ubuntu. You generally want the 7.04 release for x86. Choose a mirror close to your geographically for best download speed.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GraphicalInstall - Great installation guide for Ubuntu 7.04.
However, some computers, particularly those with AMD Mobility Radeon X1000 model graphics cards (some versions, not all) will have to use an older style installer. Instructions for this method are here.
WIRELESS
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/WirelessCardsSupported - Check this page for instructions on how to get your particular wireless card working. If you can't find your chipset listed, try searching on www.ubuntuforums.org or www.google.com.
For common wireless hardware (Intel, most Atheros cards, amongst others) wireless should work out of the box.
GRAPHICS CARD DRIVERS
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI - for AMD/ATi graphics cards. X1000 series users will REQUIRE this for 2D and 3D acceleration.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia - nVidia drivers. Required for 3D acceleration on newer cards.
OR simply try the ENVY program.
Intel cards are a little easier. If your native screen resolution is not enabled by default, type the following code into a terminal (Applications > Accessories > Terminal).
And press Ctrl + Alt + Backspace and re log in. Your screen res should be correct.Code:sudo apt-get install 915resolution
SOUND
Most sound cards work out of the box, but you may have troubles. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebuggingSoundProblems - this page will tell you how to ask for help regarding sound issues.
SYNAPTIC
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SynapticHowto - Great page on all things Synaptic Package Manager.
BERYL
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CompositeManager - The first step to enabling Beryl on your machine.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CompositeManager/InstallingBeryl - How to install Beryl.
WINE
Some Windows applications can be run inside Linux, using a program called WINE.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wine - Great, Ubuntu specific page on installing and running WINE.
And that's it for now, this is a work in progress. Feel free to give me suggestions for what to add to it!
And, I'd rather keep gaming for a separate topic. I think this guide should be more about getting Ubuntu running, rather than gaming.

This thread should be titled Ubuntu Guide or somethiing similar.
Perhaps also made into a sticky as Ubuntu seems to be #1 in popularity (and what with Dell planning in shipping Ubuntu)

Great links, Lysander. Perfect for the Google-impaired or the lazy
Consider it stuck

Absolutely fantastic reference. I even learned some things there (with regards to the nVidia drivers).
