For 9.10 are the Atom optimizations already built in or do I have to install UNR? I would rather not install UNR unless I have to. I only care about the optimizations and not the "remixed" desktop. Thanks.

    They are the same.

I used to run a customized kernel (for eeepc) in 9.04 but I've found that with 9.10 I don't have to.

You might want to run a live session to see if all the hotkeys and such work on your hp 2140. If you're not satisfied, check out what others are doing on ubuntu forums and/or hp mini forums. I know that one of the regulars on ubuntu forums released a specific version of ubuntu 9.04 for the hp mini last fall.

Also, you can install xubuntu or even do the alternate install cd with lxde for a lighter desktop. I've found that gnome and kde run better on the atom in 9.10 but are still a bit heavy. XFCE is much snappier and lxde and/or openbox flies. Just a suggestion.
