I recently installed Ubuntu 8.10 on my HP Pavillion dv6000, dual booting with Vista and the installation went great with all hardware working perfectly. I am having 2 issues though and any help would be appreciated.

    1. When booting into Ubuntu I have to hold down the space bar to advance the progress bar to the point that it will boot.

    2. When typing the insertion cursor is jumping all over the place, sometimes to a different field or even opening different screens.

    thanks..

Thanks your solution to question 1 worked perfectly. As for question 2, no I'm not hitting the touchpad when it's jumping around.

Sometimes touchpads can be really sensitive, try installing touchfreeze if you want to make sure thats not the issue.
I can't really think of anything else that would explain such behaviour.

I agree with proxima. I was having this same problem. I was like what the hell is going on with Ubuntu, but found that my touchpad was really sensitive and my thumb was just ever so slightly brushing against it. What I do is remove the module for the touchpad(and trackpad in my case) by issuing the command rmmod psmouse when I use an external mouse. Ever sine doing that my cursor does not jump anywhere.
