The other day I downloaded Linux from the Ubuntu site and successfully burned the ISO. file to a CD. I popped into my computer and booted up the live boot disk. I chose to download linux within windows, however, I'm having problems.

When Linux finishes with whatever it does, a black screen pops up. Somewhat like a command prompt. Is this suppose to pop up? If s, what do I do from there?

Did you download Wubi, or the regular Ubuntu live/install CD? I'm confused as to exactly what you have. If you have the Ubuntu live/install CD, you should boot the computer with the CD in the drive, and make sure your BIOS boots from the CD drive. That will allow for Ubuntu to boot. Then you can install it, which is very straightforward.

If you have Wubi, I believe you just get a small .exe with a torrent client, which downloads the ISO for you and then has its own installation process, which I'm not familiar with.

What happens after the flashing '_'? Does it go into GRUB(a list of options of what to boot into), or does it just stay there?
If it goes into a list of options, then it's probably because your BIOS is set to boot from a CD, and is simply searching for a CD to boot from. If this really annoys you, just hit F2, F11, ESC, or what it says to hit on your booting screen(say if it was an Acer computer, it's have Acer logo on, and ask you to hit 'F2' to go into the BIOS), then change the boot priorities list. But, PLEASE, don't do this if you're in-experienced... you could end up breaking your PC if you don't know what you're doing.
If it doesn't go into an options list, you probably wiped your PC, and will have to install Windows again- sorry :(. If this is the case, you'll have to find the Windows XP/Vista install CD/Recovery CD if your computer came with one, or pay a fee to your computer manufacturer, and ring them up.
    If neither, please further explain.

Also, have you set up your partitions for Linux?
