I'm thinking about buying a Dell D630. I don't want to pay Dell any more than I have to for their extremely expensive ram so I'm getting 512 megs from them and then upgrading it myself later.

In the mean time, how will Ubuntu work on this system? I know the requirements to install it are 256 megs so I've got double that but will it still feel a little sluggish or is Linux just really not that ram hungry? Also, do you see any major components that will cause compatibility issues before I order?

    Core 2 Duo 2.0 ghz (T7300)
    512 megs of ram
80 gig 5400 RPM hard drive
    128MB NVIDIA Quadro NVS 135M
    Intel 3945 a/g wireless

    Thanks

Looks good. Wireless will work out of the box. nVidia card should have basic functionality until you install the official drivers.

Ubuntu works on just about anything now. Can I recomend Kubuntu though - it's got more features which you can install from Ubuntu but it's more hastle free just to install Kubuntu in the first place.

Thanks guys. Glad to hear the hardware will work. I'll take a look at Kubuntu. Any ideas on how useable it will be until I can upgrade from the 512 MB of ram?

    thanks

You might see some slowdown with memory intensive applications, like large games, or NetBeans. But it would be fine for basic office/internet use until you get the extra ram.

(I use Ubuntu Feisty on a machine with only 256MB ram).

You would only have a problem with the D630 with Intel graphics, which are not compatible with 7.04 out of the box (a driver is available though). With an nVidia card it should work ok. I assume you plan to do some 3D intensive tasks?

About Kubuntu, I also tried it myself. Found it less usable and polished though, so I quickly went back to the main version.
