I started this thread so that those who like, or plan to give Unity a chance, can share tips on the new interface.
I have a issue I would like to resolve. Is it possible to set the Launcher to be always visible. When I start Firefox of Libre Office, it opens at full screen. I than adjust the size by pressing the square so that I get the program at almost full screen with the launcher showing at the left side. Is there anyway to make this default?

I'm liking Unity. It's fun. To fix your issue, alt+f2, ccsm, scroll down to Ubuntu Unity Plugin, Behavior tab, Hide Launcher, and select Never.

@stealthl
Your the man! Apparently, I did not have ccsm installed so when I activated Alt-F2 it would show me ccsm but would not launch it.
Tried it in the Terminal, and was informed that I did not have ccsm install so I ran the apt-get command. That is a really cool utility.
Thanks again. -
You're welcome. Glad I could help......

Next problem. No luck getting Google Earth to run on 11.04... but never got it working on 10.10 either.
Built the Debian package using the software manager.
Downloaded the Debian/Ubuntu *.deb
Software manager tries to install and it stops...
Looking at the reviews in the software manager, I found this:
"To install Google Earth after installing this package:
0. Ensure you are connected to the Internet
1. Open a terminal
2. Type "make-googleearth-package"
3. Wait for a while as the package builds
4. Install the resulting package"
Keeping my fingers crossed -
What happens if you try to install the package via dpkg from a terminal? -
No error messages. You are right about using the terminal.
Followed the instructions using the terminal, and got this, so I thought install failed...
But despite the error message Google Earth works
Am confused, but happy. -
Ok, short explanation of what happened there:
You successfully built the package. Unfortunately you didn't replace <package> with the actual package name in the next step. Then you wanted to correct that but forgot to delete the leading "<".
I guess the reason why it works despite of these errors is that you somehow installed <googleearth-package> previously which should have taken care for all the necessary steps. -
Sorry debguy, I posted the wrong screen shot. I noticed the leading < and run it again.
I got another error message on the second run, but I guess I failed to take a screenshot. The error message was I did not have libqtcore4 installed. I checked the Ubuntu Software Center which confirmed I have libqtcore4 installed, and Google Earth ran.
Sorry, after five months back into Linux I still have a hard time with it sometimes. But it has just been five months, and before Ubuntu 10.10, my last Linux install was RedHat Blue Curve on a desktop
Okay, this is turning out to be a help ral thread. But thanks all.
P.S. - Whenever I have a reason to use the Terminal, I feel like a super tech, even if I am only following someone else instructions. It is just so cool.Last edited by a moderator: Feb 6, 2015 -
Last issue, not a deal breaker. With 10.10 I could output 1280 x 720 to LCD TV. With 11.04, the highest I get is 1023 x 768. Laptop uses GMA 3150 graphics.
TIA -
Or the expected location is wrong hence you may need to symlink it. -
I am running 11.04 32-bit.
Google Earth is working though...
