Hi all. I've finally gotten around to attempting linux on my 5320 and chose Ubuntu. I've run into an issue and my attempts to solve it have failed. I installed the latest Ubuntu (6.06) and installation went fine, but when I tried to boot, I have no GUI. It goes straight to command line. It says it is unable to find a monitor. However, the command line is clearly visible on my screen. Any ideas?

The default Ubuntu install does not include the proprietary ATI linux drivers and is falling back to an unaccelerated VESA driver. Unfortunately, this driver does not recognise any of the widescreen resolutions your display is advertising as being available.

You can either try hacking a custom modeline for your display (not recommended ;)) or install the ATI drivers following the instructions at the unofficial ATI linux wiki.

The installer recognised my screen resolutions just fine.

I'd be willing to try that though, but it might take me a little while. Its rare that I use Linux without a GUI :p

BTW, I got it everything working, if anyone is wondering. I had to boot to recovery mode and then I used the "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" command to reconfigure my XServer. I used the Vesa video drivers and its working nicely.

Great to hear that, TV. :)

You'll probably still want to install the ATI linux drivers though, especially if you're planning on looking at XGL/AIGX (OpenGL accelerated desktop) or watching video.
