First of all i suggest you use WPA2 Personal instead of WEP which can be easily cracked in a matter of minutes. Second, what's your card, do you use NDISwrapper and can you see other wifi networks in the nm-applet?

i have the intel wireless card and it works out-of-the-box.. so no problems there..

the thing is i'm staying at my cousins place for the next couple of months and he uses WEP encryption...but for some reason i'm not able to connect to it!

also i'm sure there's no problem with my wireless card coz i took my notebook to a friends place and tried to connect to WPA2 connection and it work flawlessly!!

Can you connect to your own network? Does your friend possibly have MAC filtering enabled.

umm.. i'm sorry but i have no idea..

urgh.. there's nothin in the ubuntu forums as well.. :(

Edit: One more thing... i've tried to connect to the net in vista using the same WEP encrypted network and it works.. dont knw why its a problem wid ubuntu.

I know this is going to sound stupid, but are you sure you have the right WEP Key/Passcode?

I hope I'm not asking something which has been answered yet but can your card see your cousin's network even if it is not able to connect?

If your cousin's network shows up in a list of available networks together with a signal strength greater than 0, it means you card sees it.

Or has the problem been fixed? (The last post is two days old.)

ya the network's definitely being detected.. it jus never connects!

nope i still haven't got a fix... i even tried manually connecting thru the terminal.. but still got the same result.

i've been at ubuntu forums for sometime asking around.. and very few ppl have this same exact problem.. only, no one's found a solution!

so untill then i'll be using vista for a couple of months.. :(..at least, as long as i'm at my cousins place..

i guess i'll try out diff distro's in vista virtualboxx.. :)... always wanted to chk out kubuntu..so downloading that now.. :)

You might want to try replacing gnome network-manager with wicd. In the past, I did this and found that wicd was better at connecting to networks.
    http://wicd.sourceforge.net/download.php

Still, it's odd that you network card works perfectly everywhere else but this one location. Once, I replaced by Belkin wireless router with a Netgear. My TZ130 picked up the new router perfectly, but my wife's T340P could not hold the connection at all. In the end, I went back to the Belkin.

    Good luck.

If you can connect to the network, but can't access pages, try changing DNS server to 4.2.2.3.

If you can't connect to the network, make sure he does not have MAC filtering enabled, because the problem you are describing appears when a network cards MAC address hasn't been entered into the router. If he has no idea what MAC filtering is, it's disabled.

The DHCP server could be screwing up as well, try assigning yourself a static IP and see if you can get on the network. Try IP: 192.168.1.49. , Subnet: 255.255.255.0 , Gateway: 192.168.1.1 (or his router's IP address)

Make sure you tried all of the WEP combinations, ascii and hex.
