Whenever I try to install Ubuntu on my laptop, the installation just hangs. This is after the little bar thing loads, but before any options to do the install. I know this CD works because I have used it before. Any ideas?

does your lappy have an hard drive compatibility mode in the bios? i know it gives me problems if i try to install anything that does not support SATA natively. if it has said mode turn it to compatible then install and then turn it back to enhanced. hope this helps.
but check here to see if you want to continue.

THANK YOU.
I installed in safe mode, updated, and now I'm all good.

Good for you. If you're like the rest of us, you'll spend most of your time in Linux
I'm going into Windows in a few, just because I'm going to launch CivIV.

I've actually got Starcraft and Diablo II running in Wine. Who needs Civ4?
But if you do, it apparently plays pretty happily with Wine:
