I have successfully installed Ubuntu and it is excellent. I have been playing around with it a little and so far I love it. I have only really been web browsing and just checking out some of the features but so far so good.

Now I wanted to install beryl. I tried the pre-installed Compiz Desktop Effects but you can't configure those at all. So I tried to install beryl and emerald themes using the apt-get install beryl emerald themes command. It worked for a second but then I lost my work spaces and all of the title bars on windows were gone so i could not open, close or minimize windows. I have the nVidia GeForce Go 7400 and have the restricted driver installed. At this point I would just like to uninstall beryl and emerald themes and give it another go.

First, how would I go about uninstalling. And then secondly, is there a better way of going about it. Maybe using different video drivers or should i be fine with the ones through Ubuntu? Thanks in advance for the help.

search through there for some answers, or post and be answered.

It's down for the moment (don't know for how long), but once it's back up, the beryl wiki is helpful for problems like these: http://wiki.beryl-project.org/

Alright well it seems that I have successfully installed Beryl with Emerald themes and no problems other than the occasional screen flicker.

Now my only question is once I start Beryl Manager via alt+f2, how do i shut beryl off when i don't want it running any more and just want Metacity. There has to be a simple command for this no? Thanks for your help.

If you've started the beryl-manager, you can just right click the icon in the tray, then select "Window Manager" --> "Metacity (GNOME Default)" or something like that (it's from memory, I don't have Beryl installed on this computer).

Nope there isn't a simple command(at least one that works) from my experience.

But I have found a little trick in shutting Beryl down. It's VERY EASY.

First shutdown Beryl. Now of course Beryl will still be on after you close it, so do this ..... Go to "Desktop Effects" under the "System" & "Preferences" menu. Now check the boxes and click enable button, now uncheck and click the enable button. Now you'll notice everything is back to normal.

I don't think many know about this and log out and back in.

Thanks, good call, LIVEFRMNYC. I had actually done that before kind of by accident and it completely slipped my mind to use that again. Excellent trick.

Now if only I could get DVD's playing

Or just alt-F2 and "metacity --replace" should work.

I think you've got to download some codecs... I used Automatix2 and just a few clicks and I was done. DVDs play in my default video player (Totem i think...)

Ok. Totem is my default as well. I inserted a DVD and did the easy codec install thing and a package of gstreamer codecs were installed. They work only so so. Sometimes the picture won't show up and I can never get to the menu of the DVD. Like I inserted a DVD of season one of the office and it just started playing an episode and it only plays that episode and nothing else.

Should I remove the gstreamer package and how would I do that?

You need to install the libdvdcss2 package from medibuntu. The website should have instructions on installing and adding the repositories.

@speedsterdm: Maybe try a different player? VLC is part of the ubuntu repositories. I just tried playing the Godfather... Just like you said, Totem jumps right into the film. However, using VLC, I am able to get to the menus. If VLC doesn't start the movie automatically, you might need to go to File -> Open Disc and then type in your DVD rom drive path (example: /media/cdrom0). Hope this helps!
