I have a computer and using it right now with this config.:
120 GB of HD
Asus Cubx MB
Samsung Cd Rom
256mb of ram
Nvidia TNT2 32mb of vid ram
Intel Celeron 500mhz socket 370.
Creative sound blaster 16
I am currently running xp pro on it but i just can't wait with the loading time for each task. Also watching a single clip of video is looking at a slideshow instead.the cpu is always on the 100% usage even with one application running. so i am looking toward the linux with less energy needed. I am an Ubuntu user and i am looking toward the xubuntu. Would it run better or same? Also would the youtube videos any other less choppy?
P.S. cpu power is effecting the videos.

From Ubuntu.com:
Desktop installation
Most people will want to install a desktop system such as Ubuntu or Kubuntu. A desktop system is typically used for personal computing tasks and has a graphical user interface.
Minimum requirements
*
300 MHz x86 processor
*
64 MB of system memory (RAM)
*
At least 2 GB of disk space (for full installation and swap space)
*
VGA graphics card capable of 640x480 resolution
*
CD-ROM drive
If your system has less than 192 MB of system memory, use the Alternate Installation CD.
Recommended minimum requirements
*
500 MHz x86 processor
*
192 MB of system memory (RAM)
*
8 GB of disk space
*
Graphics card capable of 1024x768 resolution
*
Sound card
*
A network or Internet connection
If your machine can handle XP Pro (more or less), Ubuntu/XUbuntu should do pretty well in comparison but I don't know about the video situation . . . -
For doing the video, it depends entirely on what codec the video is encoded in. If you're trying to decode h.264 video, you're gonna be slow no matter what OS you're running simply because it's very CPU intensive. But Linux has much better CPU utilization and task switching, so it should run better in general. I'd try out Ubuntu, and if it ends up being too bloated, you can always just "apt-get install xubuntu-desktop" and start logging into xfce instead of Gnome. It's not a huge deal as long as you have the bandwidth

Ill be rather using ubuntu than xp. i won't be running any softwares with this old computer.

I would suggest Xubuntu, its ubuntu with xfce desktop. xfce is closer to the windows look then the default gnome and is much faster then gnome. I was hesident at first, but its so customizible and easy to use that i havnt looked back from gnome to xfce

Xubuntu is nice for older machines. If you're looking for even more performance with Ubuntu, you could consider Fluxbuntu: Ubuntu with a Fluxbox environment, so it's extremely minimalist, while being highly customizable.

I'll give it a try but
i hope that browser in fluxbuntu can support the videos
