I recently bought a 7811fx laptop, but wanted to know if anyone had any trouble with Vista 64bit and installing unix or linux on the computer? I already have my boot loader ready, just curious if anyone had any issues.
With this new laptop, i'm pondering idea of not wiping out my desktop, but throwing a 2nd hard drive in it mainly for purpose of splitting my 750gig into few partitions and putting ubuntu or such on one.
I have 2 partitions at 80 gigs, was going to make the ubuntu partition around 10 gigs and storage around 70gigs.
I basically want to dual boot for same reason anyone else, gaming on windows, work on linux![]()

Vista won't affect your other OS installation, so you will have no problem running both in a dual boot configuration.
-
ah ok I didn't know if there were any issues with the 64bit or not thanks atbnet =)
-
Well I don't have any trouble mate
because i have the exact OS setup as your idea mate
thats is Vista Ultimate x64 + Ubuntu 8.10 32Bit
Mind you though that i have installed Ubuntu using the safest and easiest way : Wubi Installer -

Good idea! Wubi is a great tool, I wish they had that years ago when I first started out with Linux.

atbnet, you by chance know any other useful programs I can install for linux? Im a first timer and would like to know anything that can make my life easier lol.
I just got latest version of ubuntu, going to put it on an 8gig usb stick, saves me from having to play the whole partition game right now. -
That all depends on what you are planning to do with it. Once you get it up and running things should run fluidly for you. Then you can begin to install some programs to fulfill the applications that you would need on Windows. I would browse through the Application manager and see what looks interesting to you and try them out.

The Vista boot-loader is kind of anal. You could try installing the Linux boot-loader to your Linux partition instead of the MBR so your Vista boot-loader stays untouched. Then install a program called EasyBCD in Windows and add the Linux boot-loader to the Vista boot-loader.
Your boot would end up looking like this:
Vista bootloader:
--> Vista
--> Linux boot-loader ---> Linux -

Should you use Ubuntu 64 or 32-bit with dual-boot Vista 64? One reason I am asking that downloading the 64-bit version of Ubuntu says 'amd-64'.

You can use either one.
