Ubuntu or / Vwmare Oddity

Hi all,

New to both Ubuntu and VMWare, have a copy of latest ubuntu running on registered VMWare 6.0.4 Workstation.

Install was easy, got her up and running with 2 problems along the way. First for some reason and no pattern my mouse will refuse to go above a certain point on the screen,

By this I mean say you moved the cursor from the bottom of the screen to the top bar. A good bit of the time it will get to a certain point and cursor will either stop going vertical or horizontal. Mouse works fine in windows, and ctrl alting out of VM and back in sometimes works sometimes doesn't.

Second I'm trying to login with Su command so I can work with some files, however it tells me my password is incorrect, which it's not as I log in as admin everytime successfully.

What is your host OS? Also, why use VMWare, i find VirtualBox to be just fine.

Are you using a USB mouse? (I'm quite experienced with Virtualbox but i'm kinda lost here with VMware Workstation)

 

If you haven't installed the VMWare tools support into your Guest OS, or if you are running an older version of VMWare tools in your Ubuntu guest, then that might very likely be your mouse problem. However, if you are running Ubuntu as your Guest OS, and you don't have the admin password, then you won't be able to install the VMWare tools package. You say you login as root all the time, but if you're running Ubuntu as the host OS, and Ubuntu as the Guest, the passwords for the root user account don't have to the be the same.

You didn't say whether you built your Ubuntu Guest OS VMWare drive yourself via an Ubuntu install process, or whether you downloaded someone else's Ubuntu Guest OS. If you installed it yourself you may have forgotten the root account password, or if you downloaded from somewhere else, then you need to find out what the root user account password was set to. Either way the only way to reset it, would be to reinstall Ubuntu again.

That is a common problem when you have not installed VMWare tools.

Also, just in case, I've also had problems with VMare under Linux where my keyboard would suddenly not release or would quit functioning after I exited my VM and came back to the Linux screen. A reboot fixes it, but I also figured out that if you change the keyboard layout in the keyboard options and then change it back, the functionality comes back.

Never run under root account. As default the new Ubuntu won't even allow you to run X in the root account, afaik, but you can still perform root commands in terminal with "sudo <command>". Root account is also disabled by default.
