As I am expecting my T61 I have been doing some research about Linux and particularly Linux on the T61. There is some nice info about Ubuntu and people seem to be able to make it function at a 90-95% compatibility level, however I have found no info on OpenSUSE (and SLED which I prefer). Does anybody have any experience running either on the T61 ? Which is better to install Ubuntu 6.10 or 7.04 ? Thanks.

k_delta,
I can't offer any insight on the matter of the T61, I do have both Ubuntu / Feisty
(2.6.20-16-generic) and SLED 10 SP1(2.6.16.46-0.14-smp) installed on two
separate desktops, the prior being a more recent kernel.
The "issue" for laptops comes in the form of acpi ( power management ) and
wireless support, which the more recent kernel has addressed to some degree.
SLED 10 SP1 has updated support for the i965 southbridge yet fails to support
(natively) e1000 gigabit ethernet, this was not addressed until 2.6.19-X and
e1000, 7.5.5.51. I am not at all certain where that kernel version stands on
wireless or acpi support.
If you do not require the convenience of having Novell specific stuff, Citrix,
Kerberos, et. al. built in I would go with Ubuntu, you can get the sources
for the add-ons and compile them yourself against the more recent kernel.

hope that helps, regards, db -
you can find a place to download a livedvd image of opensuse at download.opensuse.org

neither one will let either sound or the intel 4965 work right
the only solution is compiling the kernel with the new intel drivers, or waiting until Ubuntu Gutsy comes out in October
Ubuntu or OpenSUSE for Lenovo T61
